Before getting into which words just got added, did you know that 900 Indian words are already a part of Oxford Dictionary? Yeah, they just are, and 70 more have been added in the September edition – making English language more versatile and meaningful language. The newly added words are those which have been ‘identified as distinctive to Indian English’. The most interesting of the additions include ‘dadagiri’ and = the ever famous Indian ‘jugaad’. And the meanings are spot-on; for example, dadagiri is explained as ‘bullying behaviour’.

Here’s the list of all 70 Indian words added in the Oxford Dictionary:

While it is good fun, the fact that there are already 970 Indian words added in the OED, and more and more words are continuing to find their way to English, signifies the growing influence of Indians in the world. This is the outcome of more and more Indians becoming part of other countries and cultures, travelling, migrating as well as trading in various parts of the world.

Oh and let’s look at the funniest ones among the 70 – in ascending order. The third funniest one is ‘chamcha’. Yep, yep. And guess what the meaning is? Nope, not the kitchen spoon. It is rather described as ‘an obsequious person’. The second rank goes to ‘Chakka jam’ – a typical Gujju origin word which means ‘deliberately creating traffic jams as a form of protest’; this word may be new for a lot of Indians too – unless they are from Gujarat. Then comes the most epic one – ‘Chhi-chhi’. Can you believe that! Nah – it doesn’t mean what you think it means. It means ‘the word used to express disgust. So yeah you can chhi-chhi in your English exams and score for more.
