Known as ‘God’s own country’, Kerala is one fine destination for spending exotic holidays in India. Rich culture, vivid cuisine, friendly people and can’t-ask-for-more natural beauty attracts thousands of tourists from and beyond India every year. But if you really want to enjoy your trip and get eye-ball close to local culture of Kerala, the best time to take a trip there would be Onam – a historic harvest-time festival which is celebrated heartily across Kerala. Onam has already ended, but there’s still a chance to enjoy the last bits of festival with various Onam packages launched by Kerala Tourism Ministry under Responsible Tourism Mission and will be available till September 30.

On September 1, Kadakampalli Surendran, Minister of Tourism launched the Responsible Tourism mission with a goodwill aim of boosting development of local communities and provide a better, more traditional experience to the tourists. Through these packages, tourists will be able to enjoy raw travelling experience by participating in household Onam celebrations. So the mission will let tourists enjoy Onam and Kerala by actually being a part of it and on the other hand, it will also be helpful to interested local families and households of Kerala. You can actually enjoy Onam Sandhya meals made at home and enjoy all native local tradition which are still alive after years.

This year, 7 destinations have been covered under Responsible Tourism mission which will be expanded to at least 14 or more by next season, after receiving an overwhelming response. For now, as many as 126 households, 63 home stays and 34 restaurants have come forth for the package and about 650 families across the 7 destinations have registered to explore the feast Onasadya. Pick your destination, pick your choice of stay and enjoy the amazing festival in the lush-green lush-hearted state of India.
