Censor Board’s relevance

The Information and Broadcasting Ministry has wrapped yet another film, S Durga (previously Sexy Durga), in its folds of righteousness and it seems highly unlikely that the film can jerk out of its precarious peril. Yes, the Censor Board strikes again.

The Ministry sought Central Board of Film Certification’s intervention to jettison its screening at IFFA. Not to mention that the film had already been picked by a 13-member selection committee. And yet no stone was left unturned to revoke its screening. “Durga” is a revered Hindu Goddess symbolizing strength and the prefix “sexy” is supposedly in a bad taste.

The film is literally being punished under the rules of the emergency as something of the sort has never happened but once – during the Emergency in 1975.  Amrit Nahata’s political satire Kissa Kursi Ka faced proscription for its terse criticism. But this isn’t the only time when the Ministry has played hardball, especially since BJP government’s handling of censorship has been swirling in a downward spiral of jingoism and cow worship :

  • Indian censor boards’ plan for banned words :

It pretty much bans every word remotely related to sex – words that common Indian drops thrice in every sentence.

  • Objection to the word intercourse :

Imitiaz Ali’s Jab Harry Met Sejal faced issues for its clearance and as preposterous as it sounds it was the usage of the word “intercourse”.

  • Steamy lip-lock too hot?

A movie by the name – Befikre merited U/A certificate because it featured too many kisses. Weird?

  • “Udta Punjab” faces 94 cuts :

Really hard to believe how a movie can get 94 cuts? We disagree. The board has also objected to around 20 abusive words including ‘k*tti’ (bi***), chitta ve (a slang for drugs) and har**mi (bas****).

Is Censor Board Relevant?

The only job that technically is assigned to the Censor Board is to check on the usage of “unconstitutional” words and keep some “harmful ideologies” to its bare minimum.
