Modern English soul arguably resides comfortably over the shoulders of two giants – Adele and our very lovable Sam Smith, the two exemplary bastions of Soul music in the present music industry dominated by Pop. And luckily for many Sam Smith has come up with his new album – The Thrill of it All. The album comes after much anticipation, a slew of summer teasers and a throat surgery. The track-list has packs some very moving songs with raspy frills :
Sam Smith – The Thrill of All
Sam Smith confesses that the album is partially themed behind the breakup of his five-month relationship, and Sam has been very forthcoming with his despair in the lyrics, especially in Too Good At Goodbyes :
The album comes three and a half years after the release of In The Lonely Hour back in 2014, his debut studio album. In spite of its rather tepid responses from the critics, the album went on to win the Best Pop Vocal Album at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards.

The album follows songs like “Burning”, “Pray” and “Too Good At Goodbyes” and was released at midnight. The string of songs that follow the ones already mentioned are more rife for their melancholy exuberance and supposedly Sam cannot do without much despondency in his new album. If the recent albums are any indication, the theme of jilted lovers hasn’t yet peaked, especially after the Taylor Swift’s Reputation‘s success.
The retro-soul backed theme juxtaposed against the backdrop of R&B phrasing dots the entire album. Although gospel-themed “One Last Song” and a rather upbeat “Baby You Make Me Crazy” feature in the album, the indomitable soulful voice of Sam Smith drowns all else with its falsetto.
It would be interesting to see if the new album can replicate the success of the previous one, given that “Too Good At Goodbyes” has already hit the billboards, maybe the circumstances will be propitious enough.
