The list of the top 5 PlayStation classics that deserve a modern remake

Experience a blast from the past with these 5 Playstation classics that deserve a modern remake!

Remakes are all the rage with Sony this year as they surprised fans with the Shadow of Colossus PlayStation 4 remake during E3.

With the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy getting favorable reviews from critics and fans alike, it seems that now is a good time as ever to take a look back at some of PlayStation’s classic games that we would love to see get a remake!

The top 5 PlayStation classics that deserve a remake

Spyro The Dragon

If you had a PlayStation console back in the 90s, then odds are you had a copy of Spyro The Dragon. The game was one of Insomniac’s early releases on Sony’s console and placed the developer on the map with the Spyro series.

Like Crash Bandicoot, Spyro would benefit greatly from just a few graphical and gameplay upgrades, which is enough to satisfy fans of the action-platformer. If the easter egg in Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy is to be believed, we might be getting the Spyro remake sooner than later!

Gex: Enter The Gecko

PlayStation One was often considered the golden age of mascot platformers and no other game benefitted more than Gex: Enter The Gecko. Crash Bandicoot may wear the pants, but it’s Gex who pulls off the James Bond suit.

While the first Gex game was originally on PC, the series didn’t gain popularity until the sequel was released on PlayStation. Developed by Crystal Dynamics, Gex: Enter The Gecko uses the same engine as Tomb Raider with the gameplay and platforming taking cues from the more popular action-platformer.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver

Continuing the trend of great platformers and games with colons, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver made its mark on the PlayStation console with gameplay that infuses action-platforming with clever puzzles and mature themes.

Written by Amy Hennig of the Uncharted series, Soul Reaver puts the spotlight on new protagonist Raziel as he seeks revenge against Kain, who killed him and turned him into a wraith. Given that we haven’t seen a new Soul Reaver game in quite some time, a remake should give new gamers a taste of why the franchise was beloved back in the day.

Dark Cloud

If the PlayStation One was the golden age of platformers, PlayStation 2 was the renaissance of JRPGs. Now, there are plenty of awesome JRPGs that was released during the PlayStation 2 era but the one we want to focus on is the cult classic Dark Cloud by Level-5.

While the game is primary an action-RPG, it also manages to blend different types of gameplay, including a city-building mechanic similar to ActRaiser. Despite its weak launch, Dark Cloud eventually managed to amass a rabid fan base over the years, with critics comparing it to the likes of Ocarina of Time.

Onimusha: Warlords

If we’re going to talk about classic PlayStation games that deserve a remake, Onimusha: Warlords has got to be on that list. Fans have been wanting for Samanosuke Akechi to make his debut on the HD-era and a remake in the vein of Resident Evil would be an absolute money-maker for Capcom.

The lack of news from Capcom, however, means that fans shouldn’t be holding their breath for a remake or even a new entry for Onimusha anytime soon.

From JRPGs to platformers to even music-rhythm games, PlayStation has an absolutely diverse library of classics that would be awesome to be remade in HD. Do you have a classic PlayStation game that you would like to see be remade? Let me know in the comments below!
