Infinity…and Beyond: Sony “might” also launch a fully bezel-less smartphone at the IFA 2017

Smartphones are constantly evolving. With each generation of the flagship smartphones, we see a lot of significant improvements over their predecessors.

But, truth be told, the majority of stuff that actually changes is at the software front which is one side of the coin.

Smartphone companies create more of a buzz when they come up with a radical design. Take the Samsung Galaxy S8 for an example. Talking about smartphone designs, the new talk of the town is companies coming up with truly bezel-less phones.

Following the story that Sharp is going to be the first smartphone manufacturer to bring truly bezel-less phones (FS8016 and FS8010), a new rumor has come up (from Weibo) suggesting that Sony might also come up with a bezel-less smartphone of its own at the IFA 2017.

If this rumor turns out to be true, we might finally see the ever-awkward big bezels apparent on almost all the Sony smartphones. Sony has never been shy of using broad bezels which kind of take all the beauty of their devices away.

This also could mean a revival attempt for Sony in the smartphones market. Sony has not seen an appreciable success when it comes to Android smartphones for a considerable amount of time now. It makes complete sense that Sony comes up with something radical and out-of-the-box. This notion also gives some legitimacy to the report from Weibo.

What will be the specifications and price of the bezel-less smartphone from Sony

As claimed by Weibo, the following might be the specifications:

  • a 6-inch LCD Panel
  • 18:9 aspect ratio which is becoming a standard for the truly bezel-less phones
  • a Snapdragon 835 chipset
  • 4 GB/ 6 GB of RAM
  • 21MP primary camera

If the rumored Sony Xperia Edge listed by Mobikart turns out to be this smartphone, the price of the bezel-less smartphone could be around $400.

These are still early days for the truly bezel-less phones, but considering the big companies taking a keen interest in this technology now, the future appears to be bright for these smartphones.
