Environmental sustainability needs spurns businesses towards change

The world changes, for good or bad, continuosly. And there are changes we cannot fight, but only adapt to. The deteriorating world environment calls for our attention and many businesses around the world has answered.

As we are all aware, globalisation has connected everything in a vast web of relations. Thus businesses, because they literally run the economies, has to be adaptive of every situation. And now, with the advent of global warming and decreasing reserves of resources, the movement of Environmental Sustainability has caught wind with vast support around the world. And because public attitude affects every business, they have started to make changes in their policies and workings for the moral benefit and fulfilling social responsibility.

One such popular example is Starbuck’s recent decision to use paper straws instead of plastic ones. As part of their green movement, this decision reflects their attitude towards Environmental safety and initiated huge public applause.

Another big name in the coming years has been Unilever, with its loads of green investments. The business giant has made environmental sustainability a goal in all its operations, earning its CEO a Champion of the Earth Award for his work. The company worked on its Sustainable Living Plan and made drastic changes in its production and waste treatment activities. The result has been advantageous for all, the company, the people associated and the general public. The above mentioned award is the proof, basically, the UN recognising its efforts.

Now, another business that has been one of the first to make attempts at minimising environmental impact is Dell. A leading manufacturer in computers, the company’s policy of safe disposal of technical equipment has been legendary. A consumer can give its used electronics of any brand to Dell for safe disposal or redistribution among the locality. Coupled with their research in developing efficient technology to reduce energy use, it had lead to to a discernible reduction in carbon footprint in many parts of the world. It’s wonderful how a single organisation can make such a difference.

And it’s not only large corporations that are making such changes in respect to the environment. Small organisations are all being aware of the need of sustainable practices and are trying to make a difference.

One such company is Inteligami, an organisation which aims to provide beautiful and creative handicraft products which are eco-friendly and resorts to the principle of the three R’s. Their whole business idea is related to environmental sustainability and it reflects in their product array. An example of their uniqueness is that some of their products are made from paper which has seeds implanted in it. After the product is used or is not needed, it can be planted in the soil, thus making sure that nothing goes to waste.

There is no limit to the efforts that can be made for our mother earth and businesses around the world are set on proving this.
And amazingly, the benefit of their work is not only limited to preventing moral issues and fulfilling social responsibility. These initiatives help them run businesses even on depleting resources and also in cutting costs. But the greatest benefit of environmental sustainability is the public support which creates brand recognition. It is a long term benefit which is necessary for almost every business.

Thus, more and more organisations today are resorting to eco-friendly practices, and ultimately moving towards environmental sustainability.

It is refreshing to see the world trying an outlook that is beneficial for everyone and not controversial. It’s not rocket science though, and people are becoming aware that if the world wants to avert a global crisis, businesses would have to employ such efforts further and to greater heights.
