You must be wondering what happened with a long-time-promised Toyota Tundra Diesel? Well, the oil-burner truck is really coming, but not this year. No, the diesel full-size Tundra will wait for the next year and the arrival of the totally redesigned model.
There are several reasons for delay of the project, but the most important is the new Toyota architecture for sure.
According to the latest reports from pickuptrucks2018.com website, the Toyota and Cummins are very close to reaching an agreement on joint cooperation.
Toyota Tundra New Architecture
By using the new architecture, the Toyota Tundra Diesel will become both lighter and larger from its predecessor. Plus, it’s going to utilize a new transmission. As for the gearbox, Toyota will add either an eight-speed or even a ten-speed auto transmission. This way, the oil-chugging will boost its efficiency over the Nissan Titan XD. It’s very important for Toyota to overleap Nissan for one really huge reason: These two will use the same powertrain. Yes, the Tundra Diesel will also rely on a 5.0-liter Cummins, which currently delivers 310 horsepower and 555 pound-feet of torque.
That’s not everything from the diesel truck. The new generation Tundra will also add a number of new options inside and out. The new interior will probably host better quality materials and the newest technology, which includes a new infotainment with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto connectivity. The exterior will probably get a number of changes, mostly cosmetic, which will include some Tacoma’s and some Camry’s tweaks. What’s more important, the truck will add the latest safety features, better lights, and larger wheels.
Do you remember Toyota Tundra Dually diesel concept? That was Tundra diesel Concept from 2007. This concept was presented at SEMA 2007 and powered by monster 8.0 liter Hino inline-six engine. We definitely cant expect this engine in the production version, but Cummins 5.0 liter engine seems like a real possibility.

The Toyota Tundra Diesel is rumored to cost around $34k. The all-new pickup truck will appear sometime next year.
