Tomi Lahren Suspended Over Abortion Comments

In some jobs, you’re allowed to be as opinionated and loud as you want to be, as long as your opinions mirror those of the boss. This is a lesson learned recently by one of new media’s loudest commentators, Tomi Lauren.

The boisterous, caustic, and strident blonde burst on the scene through her daily rants on The Blaze. Her made for the internet diatribes quickly became social media gold, and that launched her career as a “pundit” into the stratosphere. She is unrelenting, unapologetic, and contentious. Always stuck on “talk” and never stopping to listen … and her fans loved her for it. Her looks may have brought her to the dance, but it was her delivery and the quotable content that people loved to “like” and “share.”

Recently, though, things took a turn. Lahren was invited to be a guest on The View, the all-ladies talk show that dishes on social and political current events. When challenged about her views on abortion by the mostly liberal panel, Lahren shocked them, and her producers, by bluntly stating: “I can’t sit here and be a hypocrite and say I’m for limited government, but I think the government should decide what women do with their bodies…”

Even using that terminology to discuss abortion is kryptonite to the predominantly anti-abortion viewers of The Blaze, including its founder, Glenn Beck. For many of them, abortion is never about the woman at all. It’s about the child … and anything else is unacceptable. So, for Lahren to say the government should butt out was more than just going off script, it was enraging to people who, five seconds earlier, loved literally everything she had ever said publicly.

Glenn Beck immediately took his employee to task…on Twitter, of course. After a terse back and forth on social media, Beck again addressed the issue on his radio program. “I would disagree that you’re a hypocrite if you want limited government, and yet you want the government to protect life of the unborn…” Disagreement, but not blanket disapproval of the person.

But then it was announced Lahren had been given a week’s involuntary vacation to consider her position and her comments. Later, some sources reported that she may be out for good. Conservative blog The Daily Caller reported that “Lahren’s inflammatory, oftentimes angry style has placed her increasingly at odds with coworkers at The Blaze… a situation that worsened after she called pro-life conservatives hypocrites…”

In other words, she’s kind of a jerk, and she’s difficult to work with, so this might be an easy way to send her packing. No one at The Blaze will likely say so, but that’s probably prevailing sentiment. That leaves folks wondering: what’s next for Lahren? Most of her views, and her trademark delivery would not really make her too welcome at more liberal outlets … and conservative media would have a hard time bringing on a name that has insulted their most loyal fans … should be interesting to watch this all play out.
