Create a Partition in Windows XP

Hard drive Partition allow the computer to treat one hard drive as a multiple volume. These partitions also help the user to install multiple operating systems on a single computer. User can use these partitions for different kind of data storage. In this article I will show you how you can create partitions on windows XP. Just follow the below step.

Download a Partition Tool

In order to create the partition in windows XP you need to download Partition Tool because there is no way to shrink volume in windows XP. If you are not able to shrink then you cannot create partition out of unallocated or free space in hard drive. You will need to use partition program like Partition Wizard or GParted to shrink your existing volume.

Re-size your Existing Partition

Use the partition tool you downloaded to re-size one of existing partition. See our below post for using the partition tool.

Create New Partition

After re-sizing you can create the partition by using the partition tool or by windows disk management.

Right click on unallocated space or free space and select “New Simple Volume”. This will open pop-up window follow the step to create new partition.

Set the Size: The first think you need to set the size of partition how big partition you want. By default it will select the entire size of unallocated space, but you can choose as much you want to allocate. Any unused space will remain unallocated.
Assign drive a letter: All partitions need a drive letter. Which allow them to have addresses for files located on the partition. You can choose letter of your choice and your choosing letter must not use by any other partition.

Format the Partition

Make sure that you have format the partition, otherwise you cannot use the partition to store the files. If you are using the partition to store files for window, set the file system to NTFS. Enter the name of partition in volume label field.
