The woman had gone to the salon for a shampoo and blow dry, she said, but hairdressers added chemical straightener to her shampoo without her knowledge or consent. And this wasn’t an isolated incident; the same thing happened to a friend of mine, and other women have also reported having their hair straightened against their will. Stories like these highlight the role that hair and hair salons play in Dominican women’s sense of racial identity — and, in turn, how rampant anti-Blackness is in Dominican culture as a whole."
