How long does it take to get citizenship interview after biometrics 2022

Many people who have already had their Biometrics appointment wonder, “How long does it take to get a citizenship Interview after biometrics?”

Waiting a long time for your citizenship interview is normal. This article will cover the waiting period and provide additional information about obtaining US citizenship.

What is a Biometrics Appointment?

A biometrics appointment is required to get certain immigration benefits.

Before your immigration benefit is granted, Uscis must ensure that you do not have a serious criminal history or immigration violations.

The FBI’s criminal database and the Department of Homeland Security’s database of non-citizen immigration violations will analyze your fingerprints, photo, and signature.

Biometrics Appointment Notice

Following receipt of I-797, you should expect to receive another notice informing you of your appointment for biometrics. The timeframe is usually 3 to 5 weeks after form N-400 is filed.

The notice will state your appointment’s date, time, and location. USCIS requires fingerprinting to conduct a security clearance and criminal background check.

Who Needs a Biometrics Appointment?

If you apply for an immigration benefit through the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), such as an H4 visa, you will have to submit your biometrics; this includes applications for:

  • work permit
  • citizenship
  • green card
  • possibly a green card renewal

Typically, you will go to a local USCIS office for your biometrics schedule if you are in the United States. If you live abroad, the appointment is set at your country’s US consulate or embassy.

The Biometrics Process

Taking your biometrics is pretty simple and usually only takes 15 to 20 minutes. You’ll be required to sign your name after taking your fingerprints and picture. Although the entire procedure is quick and straightforward, you might have to wait a little while before it’s your turn.

It’s critical to bring all necessary documentation with you the first time to prevent the need for a second biometrics appointment. The documents include your:

  • appointment letter
  • green card
  • ID card with your picture (driver’s license, passport, or state ID)

In the unlikely scenario that the FBI rejects your fingerprints, a second appointment for biometrics is needed. USCIS will send you a new appointment letter to take the second set of fingerprints

In case the second set is rejected, you will need to obtain a police clearance certificate from the local police department in each of the last five places you’ve lived and send it to the FBI.

Once your biometrics is completed, your appointment notice will be stamped. This stamp will prove that you attended your biometrics appointment. Thus, it is critical to keep your notice and stamp safe.

Interview Notice

After completing your biometrics, USCIS will send you another appointment notice for your naturalization interview. Make every effort to attend the scheduled interview time. Rescheduling your interview might extend the naturalization process.

The interview notice will be mailed as Form I-797, Notice of Action. The naturalization interview will occur at a USCIS facility near you and will most likely last less than 30 minutes.

Attending Your Naturalization Interview and Exam

The citizenship interview is usually scheduled approximately 14.5 months after the USCIS receives your naturalization application. The timeframe varies, and it may be sooner or later for some applicants.

The USCIS will send you a letter with the date and location of your interview. They will also provide a list of any documents you must bring.

During the interview, a USCIS officer will typically review the entire N-400 application to validate the answers written on your form. Understanding the questions and answers is a component of your English comprehension test.

They will also ask you to read and write a sentence in English, administer the civics exam, and review your background check results.

Receiving a Decision on Your Naturalization Application

USCIS will provide you with Form N-652, Naturalization Interview Results, following your interview. The following are the decision USCIS gives on each application:

Granted

If the evidence on file establishes your eligibility for naturalization, the USCIS may approve your Form N-400.

Continued

If you failed a test or did not provide USCIS with the necessary documents, USCIS may continue your N-400 application. It means that additional time is needed for your case as you work to resolve the issue.

Denied

If the evidence on file establishes that you are ineligible for naturalization, USCIS will deny your Form N-400.

Oath Ceremony Notice

If your interview went well, you would receive a notice to take the Oath of Allegiance (N-445, Notice of Naturalization Oath Ceremony around one to four weeks after your interview. The notice will include a request for additional questions to be submitted during the oath ceremony.

Oath of Allegiance Ceremony

Taking the Oath of Allegiance at a naturalization ceremony confirms your citizenship.

USCIS administers the oath in an administrative ceremony or a judge in a judicial ceremony. In certain USCIS districts, the ceremonies are conducted solely by a court.

After taking the Oath of Allegiance, you will surrender your green card and receive your Certificate of Naturalization.

Is Your Naturalization Case Taking Too Long?

You should be concerned if it has been more than four months after your interview. You may consult an experienced immigration attorney or contact a law firm to help you with your case.
