The Ondo State Government has declared free health care for pregnant women and children under age 5, while also approving 5 additional mother and child hospitals across the state.
The Ondo State Government has approved the extension of the mother and child Hospital to the three senatorial districts of the State.
Besides, the Akeredolu – led government has also approved the introduction of free Health care service for pregnant women and children from zero and five year old.
The mother and child hospital, which hitherto existed in Akure and Ondo towns only has been extended to other towns and local governments in the Northern and Southern Senatorial districts of the State.
Addressing reporters after the weekly Executive council meeting, the Commissioner for health, Dr. Wahab Adegbenro flanked by the Commissioner for information and orientation, Mr. Yemi Olowolabi and the Special Adviser on Education Dr. (Mrs) Ilawole Olawumi, said the Akeredolu – led administration was concerned about bringing effective health service delivery into the door steps of the people.
Dr. Adegbenro hinted that the over 500 health centers in the State are to serve as mini centers for the free health care services for pregnant women and children between zero to five year.
He said ” We have scaled up the Mother and Child hospital. As part of the efforts of the government to ensure that the vulnerable group have unrestricted access to quality health care service, council has approved that the Mother and Child Hospitals should be scaled up with five more centers.
“You will also recall that the Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, signed into law the contributory health insurance Scheme which has also made provision for the vulnerables
“The government has also approved the introduction of free health care service for pregnant women and children between zero to five year old
“From the two mother and child hospitals that we currently have, we are moving up to seven. The council deliberated and approved that the State Specialist Hospital, Ikare Akoko will now become Mother and Child hospital, Ikare
“The General Hospital in Owo will also become Mother and Child Hospital. Equally, the General Hospitals in Ore, Okitipupa and Igbokoda have been scaled to Mother and Child Hospitals respectively “.
The Health Commissioner stressed that the Akeredolu-led Administration had since inception paid a lot of attention to the health sector.
He said ” You will recall that the School of Nursing and Midwifery was absorbed by the University of Medical Science, Ondo (UNIMED) into a degree awarding institution. Also, with the new bill introduced today, when signed into law, the School of Health Technology in Akure will be upgraded into a College of Health Technology.
Earlier, the Special Adviser on Education, Dr. Olawumi said administrative activities will now commence at the Ondo State Public Service Tranining Institute.
She said civil servant in the State will now have a great opportunity of getting trained in the institute.
The Information Commissioner, Olowolabi said the council has approved a new bill that upgrades the Ondo State School of Health Technology into a College of Health Technology.
