Union County Celebrates Family PRIDE With CommUNITY Picnic

Thanks to shows like “The Fosters” and “Modern Family” LGBTQ familes have had increased visibility in mainstream media. But while there are many spaces online for families to connect with one another, sometimes people can be unaware of how to foster meaningful relationships with those they can relate to right in their own backyard.
In an effort to provide a safe space for LGBTQ families and their allies to “connect, support and celebrate together” the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders is hosting a Community Picnic at the picturesque Rahway River Parkon Saturday September 15th.
The park, which features a miniature waterfall, a swimming pool, a baseball diamond, and several picnicking grounds is a popular location for community celebrations.
This completely free event is being sponsored by several local businesses including Garwood’s Fusion D'Lite., Hillside Candy, Plainfield's Arooga's Grille House, and Union’s Smarties. Pepsi, ShopRite, and Sam’s Club are providing support as well.
The day will start off with everyone taking a trip to the “LOVE Makes a Family” poster making station where they’ll get a chance to create signs that display their Family Pride. Attendees will also have a chance to participate in a family field day, get their faces painted, play in the bouncy house, listen to music provided by a popular children’s music band and much more.
In addition to all of the family fun there will be information available on the resources available to local LGBTQ families with questions or concerns about marriage advocacy and other issues.
Union County families are being encouraged to grab their picnic baskets and blankets and join in on the fun. For those who aren’t really all that into brown bagging it there will be food trucks where lunch can be purchased because the family that pigs out together stays together!
Taking love and acceptance offline is a great way for developing children to see family dynamics that mirror their own in real life and maybe even make a few friends!
