First, we’ve officially opened up the new Edge Extension Store for submissions!

Transitioning your existing extensions to Chromium

As we move towards the general availability of the new Microsoft Edge on January 15^th, 2020, we will no longer accept new submissions for Microsoft Edge Legacy (EdgeHTML-based) extensions after December 17^th, 2019. We will continue to accept updates for your existing extensions.

We recommend you prioritize building new extensions for the new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge, and continue to support your existing EdgeHTML-based extensions to ensure a quality experience for active users.

Developers who have given consent for Microsoft to migrate their EdgeHTML extension listings to the new Microsoft Edge should begin to see their extensions available in the new Addons store experience in Microsoft Edge.

If you have already received a confirmation from us regarding migration, we encourage you to log on to the Partner Center Developer Dashboard to validate your access to the extension, and verify whether you can update it. Once the migration is complete, ownership and management will be completely transferred to you, and Microsoft will not be responsible for updating or maintaining your extension.

Migrating extension users to the new Microsoft Edge

We will migrate users’ extensions from the current version of Microsoft Edge when they update to the new Microsoft Edge (starting January 15^th). Extensions will only be migrated for users if they are already available on the Microsoft Edge Addons store at the time of switching to the new browser.

We recommend that developers update your existing EdgeHTML extensions for Chromium and publish them via the new portal as soon as possible, so your existing customers will not face any interruptions when they update to the new Microsoft Edge.

Next, for the web developers, we’ve published an example application on our GitHub page that serves as a comprehensive API demonstration of our new WebView2 control.

For our ARM enthusiasts, we’re bringing our native ARM64 builds to the Dev channel today! These builds have been in Canary for the last few weeks, and we’ve ironed out most of the major issues during that time. There’s still one known issue though: certain DRM video on some websites doesn’t play properly. 

Top feedback

Tab scrubber – The tab scrubber lets you skim through all your open tabs easily. You can see the tab favicons on your Touch Bar and can quickly browse through them and stop on the one you want to work on. Below are the improvements that we have made

1. Predictive text during scrubbing- A lot of you told us that while scrubbing through the open tabs, if you encountered a website that has an active cursor, the touchbar transformed to suggestive typing and it was painful to get back to the tab scrubbing experience. We have improved that experience by suppressing the suggestive typing until the user starts typing.
2. Color of the backplates- A lot of favicons were hard to see on the Touch Bar as they merged with the background. We have changed the color of the backplate to work well with most favicons.

Media scrubber – We made a few changes to the media scrubber as we received a bunch of feedback on this, considering it is the most used Touch Bar functionality.

1. Background layout- Previously the media scrubber was often confused with the volume one as they looked very similar. We changed the look of the background and knob of the scrubber to make the experience more “media-like”.
2. Time stamp- Now during scrubbing you will see a time stamp on the media scrubber in real time that gives an indication of how far you have scrubbed through the video.
3. Time elapsed and remaining in full screen mode – We have added a functionality in full screen mode so now you can see the ‘time elapsed’ and ‘time remaining’ move dynamically as you scrub through the video.

Right-to-Left (RTL) language support – We have extended support to the RTL languages like Arabic, Hebrew etc on the touchbar.

What’s next

We are not done with the improvements we have planned for the Touch Bar. In the coming releases we plan to make the following changes:

1. Picture-in-Picture (PIP) support – We are planning to add the PIP support on the Touch Bar to make it easier to watch videos while you are multi-tasking on the web.
2. Web dev tools – We are investigating the best way to add developer tools to the Touch Bar. We want to make it easy for you to pull up the most used actions and tools during web development.

Finally, we’ve got three features to look for in upcoming builds. 

• One of them is what we’re calling the “pinning wizard”. It will occasionally pop up from your Task Bar and suggest top websites from your history to pin directly to the Task Bar as installed websites. It can also be used at any time from … > More tools. 
• For users of high contrast themes in Windows, Edge now supports high contrast themes as well! It will follow the theme you’ve chosen in the OS Settings and brings us back to parity with the support offered in Edge Legacy. 
• And for users of Immersive Reader (formerly known as Reading View), we’ve greatly expanded the number of color themes you can choose from. Many of these are specially designed to reduce eye strain and increase reading comprehension. 

Before we get on with the rest of the features and additions that are worth mentioning this week, you should know that favorites sync is still disabled for the majority of users. This includes brand new machines you install Edge on, so if you’re setting up Edge for the first time and want access to your favorites, you’ll need to manually export your favorites to a file on a different machine and import them on the new one. We’re also working on a deduplication mechanism once favorites sync is re-enabled, which should prevent new duplicates from coming in as well as remove duplicates for users who have already had their favorites duplicated.

Known issues: 

• Navigation in new tabs sometimes fails, either showing an error that the connection is closed, or crashing the tab. In some cases, subsequent navigations in the tab are okay. 
• After an initial fix for it recently, some users are still experiencing Edge windows becoming all black. UI popups like menus are not affected, and opening the Browser Task Manager (keyboard shortcut is shift+esc) and killing the GPU process fixes it. 
• Highlighting text in the address bar then clicking on webpages sometimes causes black-on-dark text when the browser is in Dark Theme.
• The Settings page appears too big/zoomed in on certain machines.
• Some users are still not seeing Collections being enabled by default on Canary and Dev. For users who want to try Collections, enabling the flag at edge://flags/#edge-collections should still work to turn on the feature. 
• There are some issues where users with multiple audio output devices sometimes don’t get any sound from Edge. In one case, Edge becomes muted in the Windows Volume Mixer and unmuting it fixes it. In another, restarting the browser fixes it. 
• At certain zoom levels, there is a noticeable line between the browser UI and the web contents.
• Jumplist entries are not consistent between the Start Menu and the Task Bar for some users. We believe this is due to the shortcut on the Start Menu not getting migrated properly after an Edge update and are working on a fix. Additionally, after getting the update for the new icon, there are still places on the Start Menu, for example when searching, that still show the old icon. Other places like the Task Bar may be able to be fixed by un-pinning and then re-pinning any Edge shortcuts that already exist there. 

Update 80.0.355.1 (December 10, 2019)

Collections are now enabled by default for all Canary and Dev channel users, as well as Collections sync!

NONE: Some users who have manually modified their sync settings in the past may not have Collections sync enabled and will need to turn it on themselves. 

Before we get to all the most noteworthy changes, it’s worth mentioning something that hasn’t changed: favorites sync is still disabled for most people in order to prevent some crashes and favorites duplication. However, if you’re currently syncing with Edge mobile, your favorites sync hasn’t been disabled, so if you’re experiencing Edge crashing shortly after startup, it’s likely that your favorites sync is still enabled. 

Added features:

• Added an option to Reading View to increase text spacing.
• Added a prompt to verify work or school accounts that are automatically added to Edge but aren’t enabled for sync so that users are aware sync isn’t enabled.

Improved reliability: 

• Fixed an issue where closing a window sometimes crashes the browser.
• Fixed a crash on startup on ARM64 devices.
• Fixed a crash that occurs when favorites sync is enabled.
• Fixed an issue where closing a tab too quickly after adding an item to a Collection sometimes crashes the browser.
• Fixed an issue where a crash in the Collections pane causes all future additions to Collections to fail until the browser is restarted.

• Fixed an issue where Edge on Mac fails to install updates automatically.

• Fixed an issue where highlighting text on a webpage sometimes causes a browser crash.
• Fixed an issue where right-clicking sometimes crashes the browser.
• Fixed an issue where the browser UI sometimes appears to hang or turn all black, but it still responds to input and can be fixed by killing the GPU process.
• Fixed an issue where using Read Aloud sometimes crashes the tab.

• Fixed an issue where Netflix playback fails on certain machines.
• Fixed an issue where exporting a Collection to Word sometimes fails.

• Clicking a link on one virtual desktop currently opens a new tab in a window on a different virtual desktop if there’s no window open on the current desktop but there is on another. This is a regression from past behavior, which opened a new window on the current desktop.
• Jumplist entries are not consistent between the Start Menu and the Task Bar for some users. We believe this is due to the shortcut on the Start Menu not getting migrated properly after an Edge update and are working on a fix. Additionally, after getting the update for the new icon, there are still places on the Start Menu, for example when searching, that still show the old icon. Other places like the Task Bar may be able to be fixed by un-pinning and then re-pinning any Edge shortcuts that already exist there.
• Sometimes the browser will appear to not respond to any user input (clicking or scrolling in webpages doesn’t do anything, hovering over UI doesn’t make it change), but clicking on certain buttons still works (like the … menu). The cause of this is due to an error in the GPU process, and opening the browser task manager (right-click near the window minimize/maximize/close buttons or hit shift+esc on the keyboard) will open a window that will allow you to end the GPU process, which will fix the issue. This issue was inherited from upstream Chromium, and a fix for it just went in upstream, so the next Dev update should have it.

Update 80.0.328.4 (November 14, 2019)

Native ARM64 builds of Edge will run much faster and much use less battery life on ARM64 devices. If you’re running Canary on an ARM-based machine, you should get the ARM version automatically with an update.

Although we recently enabled the ability for some users to remove this account, there’s still an issue where users who are signed into Windows with a work or school account may not be able to remove that account from the browser. 
• Favorites that are set to show only the icon can be reverted to showing both the icon and text if favorites sync is enabled.
• Clicking a link on one virtual desktop currently opens a new tab in a window on a different virtual desktop if there’s no window open on the current desktop but there is on another. This is a regression from past behavior, which opened a new window on the current desktop. 
• Jumplist entries are not consistent between the Start Menu and the Task Bar for some users. We believe this is due to the shortcut on the Start Menu not getting migrated properly after an Edge update and are working on a fix. Additionally, after getting the update for the new icon, there are still places on the Start Menu, for example when searching, that still show the old icon. Other places like the Task Bar may be able to be fixed by un-pinning and then re-pinning any Edge shortcuts that already exist there if they weren’t fixed by the updates last week. 
• Windows that are minimized sometimes aren’t restored properly if the browser restores the previous session due to an update, a crash, etc. As a workaround, make sure no windows are minimized before restarting the browser. 
• Sometimes the browser will appear to not respond to any user input (clicking or scrolling in webpages doesn’t do anything, hovering over UI doesn’t make it change), but clicking on certain buttons still works (like the … menu). Update 80.0.320.3 (November 5, 2019)

Some of you may have noticed a cryptic update last week. That was part of a series of puzzles that hundreds of insiders participated in over the past weekend. The puzzles culminated in a surfing game hidden inside Edge, and the reward for beating it was the chance to see our new logo before anybody else. To unlock edge://surf, create a Collection named “Microsoft Edge” and add four items that spell “S.U.R.F.” This currently only works in the Canary channel.

With all of these exciting announcements, we do have a few known issues that are still in this week’s build: 

• Extensions that are installed from the Chrome Web Store aren’t getting automatically updated. We expect the fix for this issue to be in today’s Canary and next week’s Dev. 
• The fix for the issue where Edge’s first launch leads to a blank white window didn’t make it into this week’s build. We now expect it next week. 
• There are some issues where users with multiple audio output devices sometimes don’t get any sound from Edge. In one case, Edge becomes muted in the Windows Volume Mixer and unmuting it fixes it. In another, restarting the browser fixes it. 
• At certain zoom levels, there is a noticeable line between the browser UI and the web content.
• Some users were still seeing screenshots that are automatically taken by the feedback tool turn out garbled or all black. Another potential fix for this is expected next week. 
• Jumplist entries are not consistent between the Start Menu and the Task Bar for some users. We believe this is due to the shortcut on the Start Menu not getting migrated properly after an Edge update and are working on a fix. 
• Sometimes the browser will appear to not respond to any user input (clicking or scrolling in webpages doesn’t do anything, hovering over UI doesn’t make it change), but clicking on certain buttons still works (like the … menu). The cause of this is due to an error in the GPU process, and opening the browser task manager (right-click near the window minimize/maximize/close buttons or hit shift+esc on the keyboard) will open a window that will allow you to end the GPU process, which will fix the issue. 

Added features:

• Added the ability for websites installed as apps to be restored when a browser session is restored after update, crash, etc.
• Added support for an upstream Chromium policy that allows a user to remember a decision to open a link using another application (for example, to join a meeting in Microsoft Teams).
• Added support for periods in single-word intranet URLs.
• Added the ability to delete Collections items using the Delete keyboard key.
• Added a dialog for when browser sign-in is disabled by policy.

Improved reliability: 

• Fixed an issue where Edge crashes shortly after launch for some users if sync is enabled.
• Fixed an issue where right-clicking the back button crashes the browser.
• Fixed an issue where editing text in the address bar sometimes causes a browser crash.
• Fixed a browser crash when updating extensions.
• Fixed an issue where using the built-in abusive ad blocker sometimes causes the browser to crash upon launch.
• Fixed an issue where certain websites like YouTube rendered huge, making them unusable.
• Fixed an issue where print preview does not load.
• Fixed an issue where PDFs sometimes don’t load properly.
• Fixed an issue where right-clicking on a PDF sometimes causes the tab to crash.
• Fixed an issue where navigating to certain webpages with videos causes the tab to crash.
• Fixed an issue where Application Guard windows hang upon startup.
• Fixed an issue where all Edge windows open completely white with no UI, but disabling Application Guard mitigates the issue.
• Fixed an issue where certain DRM-protected videos don’t play.
• Fixed an issue where certain protected videos like from Netflix don’t work.
• Fixed an issue where tooltips don’t appear.
• Improved the reliability of history and favorites items appearing in the address bar suggestions dropdown.
• Improved the reliability of installation.

Changed behavior: 

• Fixed an issue where Single Sign-On stops working and users unexpectedly see a username/password prompt to log into websites.
• Fixed an issue where two Edge shortcuts are sometimes on the Taskbar after an update.
• Fixed an issue where Work profiles that were erroneously added to the browser were unremovable.
• Fixed an issue where Application Guard windows open when the browser is launched even though they shouldn’t.
• Fixed an issue where enabling Application Guard sometimes causes downloads to be blocked in non-Application Guard windows.
• Fixed an issue where the first run experience sometimes runs every time the browser is opened.
• Fixed an issue where the profile Settings page has no way for the user to fix an issue with their browser sign-in when one is needed.
• Fixed an issue where sync can’t be turned off while it’s in the “setting up” state.
• Fixed an issue where certain UI buttons show $1 instead of their keyboard shortcut in their tooltip.
• Fixed an issue where the favorites bar is shown when in full screen mode.
• Fixed an issue where Collections content sometimes gets truncated.
• Fixed an issue where Spellcheck squigglies appear in Collections items even though they aren’t actionable.
• Fixed an issue where an incorrect image is used when adding certain webpages to a Collection.
• Fixed an issue where clicking the button to open the text styles flyout in a Collection sometimes doesn’t work.
• Fixed an issue where text styling in a Collection isn’t applied properly when using the keyboard to do the selection.
• Fixed the text style dropdown when editing text in a Collection.
• Fixed an issue where Collections contents sometimes can’t be deleted.
• Fixed an issue where the cancel button isn’t functional in certain Collections dialogs.
• Fixed some issues with the Mac Touch Bar when working with multiple tabs at the same time.
• Fixed an issue where open tabs sometimes aren’t properly imported from Chrome.
• Fixed an issue where extensions aren’t sorted by name on the Extensions management page.
• Improved compatibility of certain websites with Tracking Prevention.
• Fixed an issue where Edge shortcuts were created in the wrong location in the Start menu.
