The very soft-spoken actress of Bollywood and the UN Environment Goodwill Ambassador for India, actress Dia Mirza revealed something from her personal life. Being an environmentalist she has been committed to raising awareness about environmental issues, the world is facing currently. Recently, she revealed that she does not use Sanitary Napkins during her periods.

Yes, you read it right! In an interview with NBT, the actress said that she does not use Sanitary Napkins during her periods. And the reason behind that is these have a harmful effect on the environment. Dia said:

The Sanitary napkins and diapers in our country are polluting the environment on a larger scale and that’s why during periods I have stopped using sanitary napkins. As an actor, if I am saying this then it is a big thing because we also promote sanitary napkins. Whenever I get offers of sanitary napkins promotions, I clearly deny them.

And she makes sense! menstrual pollution is harming our environment. The waste from used sanitary napkins is hampering our surroundings. Dia Mirza also suggested using biodegradable napkins in place of regular sanitary napkins. Biodegradable napkins do not leave carbon footprints. The actress further said that:

Now I use biodegradable napkins that get destroyed 100 percent naturally. In our country, women are using cotton during periods for a long time but now many options have come that are bad for the environment. The women in India should stop using sanitary napkins and should use protective and secured biodegradable napkins.

Do you know that every woman who uses sanitary napkins can generate up to 125 kg of non-biodegradable waste through her menstruating years alone? However, there is no official record of it but according to a survey conducted in the year 2011, it was revealed that 9000 tonnes of menstrual waste is generated in India every month. This waste is further dumped in landfills which ultimately pollutes the environment.
