Nine members of a parenting group “Chocolate Milk Mommies” featured in a photo shoot, in a bid to raise awareness and remove the stigma surrounding Breastfeeding. In the viral picture, women posed as breastfeeding goddesses in a nursing photo session meant for Black Breast-Feeding Week.
Rauslyn Adams, 26, a member of the group, was quoted as saying to People magazine:
“To us, a goddess theme was perfect because they represent strength, poise and patience; qualities we all feel to be important when breastfeeding.”
Adams further added: “It is taboo within the African American home to breastfeed your child, let alone to do it past the age of 1.”
Unfortunately, some African American women see breastfeeding as returning to slavery days, therefore, the moms of Chocolate Milk Mommies, led by Angel Warren, decided to do this photoshoot to encourage Black women to breastfeed.
Breastfeeding has a lot of benefits both for the health of the mother and the baby.
