The biggest celebration of India i.e its Independence Day is coming its way tomorrow on August 15. However, its neighboring country Pakistan is celebrating it today in full enthusiasm. Ever wonder why Pakistan celebrates its Independence Day a day just before India? Many of you don’t know the reason so let’s explore it as these are the facts associated with the very grand day of every Indian’s life. As we all got independent in the month of August in 1947 and suffered a painful partition of our motherland India.

As per the facts, Pakistan’s first Independence day was also celebrated on August 15 but later it was advanced to August 14. The reason behind this according to the theories is that British Viceroy Lord Mountbatten had chosen the day of August 15 to celebrate the surrender of Japan to the Allies Power which was resulted in the end of World War II in 1945. He sought to transfer power to Pakistan on August 14 so that he could be present in New Delhi to observe India’s maiden Independence day celebration.

The other reason is that, in 1947, 15 August happened to be the Jummat-ul-Wida, the last Friday of the holy month of Ramzan, and Jinnah asked all Muslims across the world to come together at mosques and pray and seek His guidance to make Pakistan a great state. The other amazing fact is the postage stamps of Pakistan released in July 1948 commemorating the day also mentioned 15 August 1947 as its Independence Day. Also the Indian Independence Act of 1947 shows that these two independent countries were formed on August 15. However, as Pakistan wanted an identity distinct from India, which led to the change.

The first governor General of Pakistan Mohammad Ali Jinnah in his speech told the people of Pakistan that,

“It is with feelings of greatest happiness and emotion that I send you my greetings. August 15 is the birthday of the independent and sovereign State of Pakistan. It marks the fulfillment of the destiny of the Muslim nation which made great sacrifices in the past few years to have its homeland,”

Therefore, in 1948 Pakistan changed the day of its independence, because it coincided with the 27th day of the Holy month of Ramadan which is also an auspicious date of the Islamic lunar calendar. Since then, Pakistan is celebrating its Independence Day on August 14.
