10 Dreadful Riots in Indian History That Took Thousands of Lives

1) Saharanpur Riots – 2014

On July 25, a riot occurred due to the rivalry between Hindus and Muslims for a piece of land. This riot took 3 lives and many got injured. 

2) Muzaffarnagar Riots – 2013

Again a riot occurred due to the rivalry between Hindu and Muslim community which led to the loss of 48 lives and 90 injured people.

3) Deganga Riots – 2010

The 2010 Deganga riots occurred at Deganga in the district of 24 Parganas, West Bengal on 6 September 2010 when Muslim mobs resorted to arson and violence against the local Hindu community. The result was many lost their lives and many went homeless.

4) Aligarh Riots – 2006

The rioting started on the night of 5 April when according to some reports, members of the Muslim community removed the decorations on a Hindu temple during the festival of Ram Navami while another version as reported by some media suggests that riots started after some Muslims objected to the overnight celebration of Ram Navami. 7-8 people died in this.

5) Gujarat Riots – 2002

It was a three-day period of inter-communal violence. The burning of a train in Godhra on 27 February 2002, which caused the deaths of 58 Hindu pilgrims returning from Ayodhya, is noted to have resulted in the violence. These riots resulted in the deaths of 790 Muslims and 254 Hindus. 2,500 people were injured and 223 more were reported missing. An estimate of around 1926 deaths was recorded.

6) Mumbai Riots – 1992

The Bombay or Mumbai Riots occurred in December 1992 and January 1993, in which around 900 people died. The riots caused due to the escalations of hostilities after large-scale protests by Muslims in reaction to the 1992 Babri Masjid Demolition by Hindu Karsevaks in Ayodhya.

7) Bhagalpur Riots – 1989

These riots started on started on 24 October 1989 between the Hindus and the Muslims in the Bhagalpur district of Bihar. Over 1,000 people were killed, and another 50,000 were displaced.

8) Kashmir Riots – 1986

These riots occurred when the Kashmiri Muslims forced Kashmiri Pandits to flee the Kashmir valley as a result of terrorism. This led 1000 people lost their lives and made more than thousand people homeless.

9) Anti-Sikh Riots – 1984

These riots occurred after the death of then Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi who was murdered by her own Sikh bodyguards. About 2,800 deaths across India, including 2,100 in Delhi were reported in these riots.

10) Kolkata Riots – 1946

These riots are called as Direct Action Day and also Great Calcutta Killings. 4,000 people died in these riots. 10,000 people got injured. It was occurred again due to the Hindu-Muslim communal rivalry.
