History

In 1946, the International Society of Cardiology was formed so cardiologists could share information on the latest advances in the treatment of various heart diseases. The International Cardiology Federation was formed, in 1970. These 2 agencies would then merge 8 years later, to become the International Society and Federation of Cardiology, which is also known as ISFC, in 1978.

During the mid-1990s, an agreement was signed between the UNESCO, World Health Organization, and the ISFC. These agencies decided to cooperate with each other on health-related issues such as rheumatic fever, Chagas’ disease, and heart disease. After two years, the ISFC Board decided to change its name to the World Heart Federation. Ever since this agency currently works with member agencies all over the world and has been at the forefront of cardiovascular health.

In 2000, the World Heart Federation decided to organize World Heart Day which is observed on the last Sunday of each year. Over the next 13 years, they would then launch a number of initiatives that would raise the attention given to cardiovascular diseases. In the year of 2013, the World Heart Federation decided to organize the holiday on the 29th of September each year, a day that it has been celebrated on ever since.

The heart-related problems and deaths can be solved by the active involvement of the common public through the campaign of world health day. Various private and governmental organizations including NGOs in the world are working to spread the awareness of CVD to the people(cardiovascular disease-the world’s number one killer).

World Heart Day is celebrated by both governmental and non-governmental agencies all around the world.
