List of Useful Mac Keyboard Shortcuts for Power Users

MAC OS X is the latest operating system preinstalled with the Apple’s MacBook which have tons of keyboard shortcuts which are hidden.

here is the list of some shortcuts:

Keyboard Shotcuts

  1. Command+A: Selects all items in the active window (icon view), column (column view), or in the list (cover flow view)
  2. Command+C: Copies selected items
  3. Command+D: Duplicates the selected item(s)
  4. Command+E: Ejects the selected volume
  5. Command+F: Displays the Find dialog
  6. Command+H: Hides All Finder windows
  7. Command+I: Shows info for selected item or items
  8. Command+J: Shows the view options for the active window
  9. Command+K: Displays the Connect to Server dialog
  10. Command+L: Creates an alias for the selected item
  11. Command+M: Minimizes the active window
  12. Command+N: Opens a new Finder window
  13. Command+O: Opens (or launches) the selected item
  14. Command+R: Shows the original for selected alias
  15. Command+T: Adds the selected item to the Sidebar
  16. Command+V: Pastes items from the Clipboard
  17. Command+W: Closes the active window
  18. Command+X: Cuts the selected items
  19. Command+Z: Undoes the last action (if possible)
  20. Command+,: Displays Finder Preferences
  21. Command+1: Shows the active window in icon mode
  22. Command+2: Shows the active window in list mode
  23. Command+3: Shows the active window in column mode
  24. Command+4: Shows the active window in cover flow mode
  25. Command+[: Moves back to the previous Finder location
  26. Command+]: Moves forward to the next Finder location
  27. Command+Del: Moves selected items to the Trash
  28. Command+up-arrow: Show enclosing folder
  29. Command+`: Cycles through windows
  30. Command+/: Shows/Hides Status bar
  31. Command+?: Displays the Mac OS X Help Viewer
  32. Command+Shift+A: Takes you to your Applications folder
  33. Command+Shift+C: Takes you to the top-level Computer location
  34. Command+Shift+G: Takes you to a folder that you specify
  35. Command+Shift+H: Takes you to your Home folder
  36. Command+Shift+I: Connects you to your iDisk
  37. Command+Shift+Q: Logs you out
  38. Command+Shift+N: Creates a new untitled folder in the active window
  39. Command+Shift+P: Shows/Hides Preview pane
  40. Command+Shift+T: Shows/Hides Tab bar
  41. Command+Shift+U: Takes you to your Utilities folder
  42. Command+Shift+Del: Deletes the contents of the Trash
  43. Command+Option+H: Hides all windows except the Finder’s window(s)
  44. Command+Option+I: Opens the Inspector for the selected items
  45. Command+Option+N: Creates a new Smart Folder
  46. Command+Option+T: Hides the Finder window toolbar
  47. Command+Option+Space: Opens the Spotlight window
  48. Command+Space: Opens the Spotlight menu
  49. F8: Choose another desktop using Spaces
  50. Control+up-arrow or F3: Displays the Mission Control screen
  51. Control+down-arrow or Control+F3: Shows all open windows for the current application using Mission Control
  52. F11 or Command+F3: Hides all windows to display the Desktop using Mission Control
  53. F12 or F4: Displays your Dashboard widgets
  54. Space: Quick Look
  55. C: Boots from the CD or DVD that’s loaded in your optical drive (if you have one) or a bootable USB flash drive
  56. Media Eject: Ejects the CD or DVD in your optical drive (if you have one)
  57. Option: Displays a system boot menu allowing you to choose the operating system and/or volume
  58. Shift: Runs your MacBook in Safe Mode, preventing your Login Items from running; runs a directory check
  59. T: Starts your laptop in FireWire or Thunderbolt Target Disk mode
  60. Command+R: Boots from the El Capitan Recovery HD
  61. Command+Option+R: Boots El Capitan Recovery using your Internet connection
  62. Command+V: Show OS X Console messages
  63. Command+S: Starts your MacBook in Single User Mode
  64. Command+Option+P+R: Resets Parameter RAM (PRAM)

Here, we also complied all important MacBook keyboard shortcut that MacBook power users should know:

Volume:

  1. Option-Shift or Volume Control key: Turn up or down the volume in 1/4 increments

In the “Finder” application:

  1. Command-Shift-A: Jump to the “Applications” folder
  2. Command-Shift-D: Jump to the “Desktop” folder
  3. Command-Shift-U: Jump to the “Utilities” folder
  4. Command-Shift-H: Jump to the “Home” folder

In the browser:

  1. Command-Control-D: Define the word under your mouse cursor
  2. Command-L: Jump to the browser address bar

Miscellaneous:

  1. Command-F3: Hide every window and see your Desktop
  2. Command-W: Close the window you’re on
  3. Command-Option-W: Close every window in an open app
  4. Command-Tab: Switch between open apps
  5. Command-Space: Open “Spotlight Search” to find anything on your Mac
  6. Command-Shift-3: Take a screenshot of your entire screen
  7. Command-Shift-4, and then click and drag over the area that want to screenshot: Take a screenshot of a specific area
  8. Command-Option-Esc: Force quit apps that aren’t responding
  9. Command-Option-Shift-Delete: Empty the Trash immediately

Cut, copy, paste, and other common shortcuts:

  1. Command-X: Cut the selected item and copy it to the Clipboard
  2. Command-C: Copy the selected item to the Clipboard. This also works for files in the Finder
  3. Command-V: Paste the contents of the Clipboard into the current document or app. This also works for files in the Finder
  4. Command-Z: Undo the previous command. You can then press Command-Shift-Z to Redo, reversing the undo command. In some apps, you can undo and redo multiple commands
  5. Command-A: Select All items
  6. Command-F: Find items in a document or open a Find window
  7. Command-G: Find Again: Find the next occurrence of the item previously found. To find the previous occurrence, press Command-Shift-G
  8. Command-H: Hide the windows of the front app. To view the front app but hide all other apps, press Command-Option-H
  9. Command-M: Minimize the front window to the Dock. To minimize all windows of the front app, press Command-Option-M
  10. Command-N: New-Open an new document or window
  11. Command-O: Open the selected item, or open a dialog to select a file to open
  12. Command-P: Print the current document
  13. Command-S: Save the current document
  14. Command-W: Close the front window. To close all windows of the app, press Command-Option-W
  15. Command-Q: Quit the app
  16. Option-Command-Esc: Force Quit-Choose an app to force quit. Or press Command-Shift-Option-Esc and hold for 3 seconds to force just the front app to quit
  17. Command–Space bar: Spotlight-Show or hide the Spotlight search field. To perform a Spotlight search from a Finder window, press Command–Option–Space bar. If you use multiple input sources to type in different languages, these shortcuts change input sources instead of showing Spotlight
  18. Space bar: Quick Look-Use Quick Look to preview the selected item
  19. Command-Tab: Switch apps-Switch to the next most recently used app among your open apps
  20. Shift-Command-Tilde (~): Switch windows-Switch to the next most recently used window of the front app
  21. Shift-Command-3: Screenshot-Take a screenshot of the entire screen. Learn more screenshot shortcuts
  22. Command-Comma (,): Preferences-Open preferences for the front app

Document shortcuts

  1. Command-B: Boldface the selected text, or turn boldfacing on or off
  2. Command-I: Italicize the selected text, or turn italics on or off
  3. Command-U: Underline the selected text, or turn underlining on or off
  4. Command-T: Show or hide the Fonts window
  5. Command-D: Select the Desktop folder from within an Open dialog or Save dialog
  6. Control-Command-D: Show or hide the definition of the selected word
  7. Shift-Command-Colon (:): Display the Spelling and Grammar window
  8. Command-Semicolon (;): Find misspelled words in the document
  9. Option-Delete: Delete the word to the left of the insertion point
  10. Control-H: Delete the character to the left of the insertion point. Or use Delete
  11. Control-D: Delete the character to the right of the insertion point. Or use Fn-Delete
  12. Fn-Delete: Forward delete on keyboards that don’t have a Forward Delete key. Or use Control-D.
  13. Control-K: Delete the text between the insertion point and the end of the line or paragraph
  14. Command-Delete: Select Delete or Don’t Save in a dialog that contains a Delete or Don’t Save button
  15. Fn+Up Arrow: Page Up-Scroll up one page
  16. Fn+Down Arrow: Page Down-Scroll down one page
  17. Fn+Left Arrow: Home-Scroll to the beginning of a document
  18. Fn+Right Arrow: End-Scroll to the end of a document
  19. Command+Up Arrow: Move the insertion point to the beginning of the document
  20. Command+Down Arrow : Move the insertion point to the end of the document
  21. Command+Left Arrow: Move the insertion point to the beginning of the current line
  22. Command+Right Arrow: Move the insertion point to the end of the current line
  23. Option+Left Arrow: Move the insertion point to the beginning of the previous word
  24. Option+Right Arrow: Move the insertion point to the end of the next word
  25. Shift+Command+Up Arrow: Select the text between the insertion point and the beginning of the document
  26. Shift+Command+Down Arrow: Select the text between the insertion point and the end of the document
  27. Shift+Command+Left Arrow: Select the text between the insertion point and the beginning of the current line
  28. Shift+Command+Right Arrow: Select the text between the insertion point and the end of the current line
  29. Shift+Up Arrow: Extend text selection to the nearest character at the same horizontal location on the line above
  30. Shift+Down Arrow: Extend text selection to the nearest character at the same horizontal location on the line below
  31. Shift+Left Arrow: Extend text selection one character to the left
  32. Shift+Right Arrow: Extend text selection one character to the right
  33. Option+Shift+Up Arrow: Extend text selection to the beginning of the current paragraph, then to the beginning of the following paragraph if pressed again
  34. Option+Shift+Down Arrow: Extend text selection to the end of the current paragraph, then to the end of the following paragraph if pressed again
  35. Option+Shift+Left Arrow: Extend text selection to the beginning of the current word, then to the beginning of the following word if pressed again
  36. Option+Shift+Right Arrow: Extend text selection to the end of the current word, then to the end of the following word if pressed again
  37. Control-A: Move to the beginning of the line or paragraph
  38. Control-E: Move to the end of a line or paragraph
  39. Control-F: Move one character forward
  40. Control-B: Move one character backward
  41. Control-L: Center the cursor or selection in the visible area
  42. Control-P: Move up one line
  43. Control-N: Move down one line
  44. Control-O: Insert a new line after the insertion point
  45. Control-T: Swap the character behind the insertion point with the character in front of the insertion point
  46. Command–Left Curly Bracket ({): Left align
  47. Command–Right Curly Bracket (}): Right align
  48. Shift–Command–Vertical bar (|): Center align
  49. Option-Command-F: Go to the search field
  50. Option-Command-T: Show or hide a toolbar in the app
  51. Option-Command-C: Copy Style-Copy the formatting settings of the selected item to the Clipboard
  52. Option-Command-V: Paste Style-Apply the copied style to the selected item
  53. Option-Shift-Command-V: Paste and Match Style-Apply the style of the surrounding content to the item pasted within that content
  54. Option-Command-I: Show or hide the inspector window
  55. Shift-Command-P: Page setup: Display a window for selecting document settings
  56. Shift-Command-S: Display the Save As dialog, or duplicate the current document
  57. Shift–Command–Minus sign (-): Decrease the size of the selected item
  58. Shift–Command–Plus sign (+): Increase the size of the selected item. Command–Equal sign (=) performs the same function
  59. Shift–Command–Question mark (?): Open the Help menu

Sleep, log out, and shut down shortcuts

  1. Power button: Press to turn on your Mac or wake your Mac from sleep. Press and hold for 1.5 seconds while your Mac is awake to display a dialog asking if you want to sleep, restart, or shut down. If you don’t want to wait 1.5 seconds, press Control–Power button or Control–Media Eject. Press and hold for 5 seconds to force your Mac to turn off
  2. Control–Command–Power button: Force your Mac to restart
  3. Control–Shift–Power button or Control–Shift–Media Eject: Put your displays to sleep
  4. Control–Command–Media Eject: Quit all apps, then restart your Mac. If any open documents have unsaved changes, you’ll be asked whether you want to save them
  5. Control–Option–Command–Power button or Control–Option–Command–Media Eject: Quit all apps, then shut down your Mac. If any open documents have unsaved changes, you’ll be asked whether you want to save them
  6. Shift-Command-Q: Log out of your macOS user account. You’ll be asked to confirm
  7. Option-Shift-Command-Q: Log out of your macOS user account immediately, without being asked to confirm
