Youtube new monetization policy

4000 watch hours and 1000 subscribers within a period of 12 months

Youtube is now getting tougher for publishers and more so for the new youtube channels. It’s the other day youtube upgraded their monetization icons for existing creators where some videos are held for review due to content being identified as not suitable for all advertisers. On the 17th of January, 2018, YouTube caused a great blow and shock to the new youtube channels where new creators have to forget about 10,000-lifetime views and get used to the new policy. Get reviewed after reaching 4,000 watch hours in the previous 12 months and 1,000 subscribers

New YouTube Monetization Policy

Starting from 17th January 2018, YouTube will require you to have reached 4,000 watch hours in the previous 12 months and 1,000 subscribers. For most old creators, you will realize this is a no-nonsense policy. Four thousand hours is equivalent to 5 and a half months, which is not simple to achieve. This also explains one of the reasons Youtube took a long time to process new youtube channels during the December holiday, they were busy updating these policies and considering other things.

Get reviewed after reaching 4,000 watch hours in the previous 12 months and 1,000 subscribers

Importance of new YouTube Monetization Policy

The previous YouTube monetization policy required you to just have ten thousand lifetime views, which could be simply achieved by non-serious channels whose work was just to re-upload videos just to achieve 10 thousand views. Right now re-uploading someone’s videos with the aim of getting monetized won’t work since re-uploading can give you views but not subscribers. Also, some channels used to buy views to achieve the 10k threshold, which won’t give you 1k subscribers. New youtube channels will be required to sweat and work seriously or else quit youtube. Another importance would be, starting now henceforth, only quality channels will be approved hence getting rid of scammers hence giving more confidence to advertisers

Disadvantages of New YouTube Monetization policy

4000 watch hours and 1000 subscribers will be a great blow to new youtube channels. This is one factor that will kill new creators who want to start creating content with the aim of making money. Making money from something you love is not only encouraging but also motivating hence many new youtube channels whose niches are not wide will be killed as a result.

Actual meaning of 4000 watch hours in the previous 12 months

What does 4000 watch hours in the previous 12 months mean? After youtube tightened its youtube partner application policy, lots of confusion emerged especially when calculating your youtube watch hours in the previous 12 months. Let’s try to understand the actual meaning of the 4,000 watch hours in the previous 12 months.

Meaning of 4,000 watch hours in the previous 12 months

For YouTubers, it’s very much important to understand the concept of 4000 watch hours. Before we understand when the count starts and how to determine your last 12 months, let’s first understand the 4000 watch hours regardless of duration.

Watch hours is how much time your videos have been watched. Your videos should be watched by viewers for 2,40,000 minutes(4k hours), and 1000 subscribers to enable monetization. Let’s take an example, if you uploaded 12 videos of 5 minutes in length, you will require 4000 people to watch all of them:

12 x 5 x 4000 = 240,000 minutes = 4000 hours.

How to determine your 4000 watch hours in the past 12 months

The count for the 4000 watch hours in the previous 12 months starts from the time you created your channel. How many watch hours has your channel gained in the previous 12 months? Many creators think that 12-month counts start from the time of the first upload, but that’s not the case.

To determine your watch hours in the previous 12 months, follow the following instructions:

  1. Login into your youtube channel
  2. Click on the account icon and select my channel
  3. Click on Creator Studio
  4. Then, click on Analytics from the sidebar
  5. Then select the last 365 days’ analytics, as shown in the screenshot below
  6. This should be your final output on the analytics page

If your watch hours display in minutes, convert them into hours. Whatever watch time you view on the basis of the last 365 days, that should be your actual watch time for the previous 12 months. Actually, you don’t need to bother understanding when the count started, your last 365 days of watch time, is your previous 12 months’ watch time.

To make your analytics report in hours instead of minutes, click on the settings icon on the analytics page. Then select hours as the unit for measuring watch time. For any clarifications, please ask in the commenting system below, am going to reply it as soon as possible
