Avoid Food Allergies by Scanning Barcodes on an iPhone/iPod

*** An easy way to avoid the wrong or bad foods at the supermarket:http://www.shopwell.com
This website allows you to define your Food preferences and allergens, then you can use the iPhone app, called ShopWell [FREE] to scan barcodes at the market and get a rating of how well it scores according to your health, additive and allergy preferences!!!  (It adds scanned/searched items to your website profile, though the history is not viewable in the app — maybe they'll add that soon!)

[A similar app "worth mentioning" is called Fooducate [FREE] (http://fooducate.com) which has a gorgeous interface design with the ability to COMPARE products, as well as providing suggestions for healthier alternatives.  (Though it lacks the personalization preferences — maybe someday they'll add it.  It does, however, maintain a history of scanned/searched items within the app!)]

*** Want a deeper ingredient-by-ingredient evaluation of additives and allergens:
http://foodessentials.com
This app, FoodEssentials Scanner [$3], provides a more detailed item-by-item listing of nutrients, allergens, additives and custom ingredients (with individual item color-coded warning levels) from a scan of any product's barcode; plus the ability to personalize what specific items are shown, as well as, a history of items.

Or an Exhaustive FOOD & BEAUTY ADDITIVES CHEMICALS Database:
http://iscanmyfood.com
This iPhone/iPod app, iScanMyFood [$10], allows you to take a photo of any ingredient list (of food AND beauty products) and learn more about the ingredients listed which are color coded by safety, and provides links to additional information.  The set of ingredients can also be saved under a product name for future reference.  The database has over 3000 additives and is an exhaustive reference for everything you wanted to know about what is in any product (it better be for $10!)
[This app scans the ingredient list directly and returns with a rating of each individual item, no need to worry if the "product" isn't in their database]

and one more thing…

KNOW HOW LONG YOU CAN KEEP OPENED ITEMS IN THE FRIDGE with:
http://stilltasty.com
Avoid food spoilage and know how long you can keep items in the fridge (opened and unopened) with this handy app, called StillTasty [FREE], for the iPhone/iPod.  Allows you to add items to an alert list for a spoilage reminder or a shopping list for needed replacements.

Enjoy!
