Understanding the psychology of different photographers

“Photography is an art of observation. It has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them” – Elliott Erwitt

They say a picture speaks a thousand words and it is said that Photography in the end not only tries and speak about the psychology of the photographer but also the things they try and capture. But does all type of photographer go through the same psychology while clicking a picture? Let’s find it out here.

Thinking Of Diverse Kind of Photographers

1.Wildlife Photography

Wildlife photography deals with capturing animals and their surroundings. The most challenging part of wildlife photography is to have the subject close to you, have proper depth of field and proper lighting. For an image to communicate in wildlife, the psychology of colors plays a very important role. Colors can invoke a lot of emotions in a picture.

Sudhir Shivaram, an award winning wildlife photographer, while talking about the wildlife photography had said that “A deep understanding of and concern for the wild environment ought to be an integral part of a good nature photographer’s ‘eye’ in order to be able to convey the spirit behind a picture.”

2.Landscape photography

Every person loves clicking or even looking at scenic or nature pictures. What usually attracts a person to landscape photography is the beauty of nature in different forms and facets. Lighting plays a very important role in landscape photography. Most of the photographers prefer to shoot pictures early morning or during late afternoons. The basic psychology behind it is that during this time the sun is lower and fails to create impact with colors. Also, it is said that composition, environment and lighting in landscape photographs can provoke human emotions and play a very important role in landscape photography.

3.Portrait photography

Portrait photography involves a lot of connection between the person being photographed and the photographer. Portrait photography needs a lot of communication amongst the person and photographer. The photographer needs to establish a trust level so that the person can feel at ease and feel good about it. Lighting, angles and other factors comes secondary when it comes to portrait photography. Talking about the psychology of portrait photography, John Cassidy in his blog had said that “When I take someone’s photograph I talk to them. We talk about what they will use the photographs for, what their line of work is, what they enjoy doing when they are not working. We chat – we get to know each other a bit, until both of us start to relax. Because I can’t take a great photograph until I start to understand a little bit about you.In portrait photography it is very important to keep the camera away for a bit and make the person comfortable first.

4.Candid photography

The best way to capture a candid photography is by not telling the person or group of people to pose. In recent times, candid photography has become increasingly popular specially wedding photography. The main psychology involved behind candid photography is to keep it as natural you can. The spontaneity in candid photography is what attracts people to the pictures. The person or group of people should appear relaxed as they are not aware of the pictures being clicked. The photographer tries and captures the decisive moment while not making it artificial.

5.Fashion Photography

Fashion photography is one of the most creative form of photography. Fashion photography is usually carried out for fashion magazines and advertisements. The main purpose of fashion designers is to create something beautiful so that the one who wears it can feel beautiful. It tries to bring the desire and passion in the viewer by creating a memorable shot.

Catalia Serban has perfectly described the psychology of fashion photographer as “a way to express himself, the models, and the products as one coherent piece of art. The fashion photographer tries to bring to all three a liveliness that transcends each one individually, and to simply make the viewer stop, stare, and think, “wow”! I want to go out and buy that Valentino evening dress or that pair of Jimmy Choo pumps or that new Louis Vuitton handbag!”

6.Food photography

Food photography is more of a still life photography which deals with enticing the customers towards the food being shot. The psychology behind food photography is to make the food look attractive. The best way to make the food look attractive is to use natural light. The photographer while clicking the picture takes special attention towards the lighting so that actual colors come out. Colors, depth of field, background and props also play an important role in food photography and the photographer makes sure that these elements help them to attract the customers.

7.Street photography

To carry out street photography, it is very important for the photographer to remove the psychological barriers with the subject he is clicking. The street photography can become interesting only if it is told from the subject’s perspective. Thus it is very important for the photographer to face the barrier with the people of the streets and talk to strangers. For that the photographer needs to get out of the fear of rejection while approaching strangers and not feel shy about it.  The photographer tries to capture the real-life scenes and has to be very observant while capturing the moments in street photography.

 8.Architectural photography

Just like landscape photography, light plays a very important role while shooting architectural photographs. The photographer also looks a great deal into the white balance setting for any interior setting where there are artificial lightings. Also in architectural photography, the intention behind the pictures is to create a canvas out of the picture and thus reflections, intricate brickworks, shadows and lines play a very important role.

However, photography is never accurate. Each photographer has a different story to tell and different perspectives behind clicking the pictures. They all carry different interpretations and the main purpose of any picture is to make it unique and timeless. The psychology behind photography is to reflect the soul and thoughts. It is also important to dig deeper into a photograph to understand what it is trying to communicate.
