The Coppola soundtrack: Justlikehoney to Hong Kong Garden

Without question, my favourite soundtracks of all time 'ever ever',(making like Kanye West), are Performance and Blow-Up. I mean Herbie Hancock? Ry Cooder? Jagger? And I know this is probably because I love the films so much, but they are outstanding soundtracks even without the visuals.

Now, soundtracks are huge. Just look at what Trainspotting spawned; the 90s soundtrack of uber-cool referencing. Even David Lynch took his soundtracks to another level, adding Bowie, This Mortal Coil and Trent Reznor to the mix. And then there's Baz Luhrman, who seems to make films for his soundtracks. But one of the coolest usages of contemporary music in a film was for Apocalypse Now. In particular, The Doors' 'The End' spliced with Marlon Brando's Kurtz, made for chilling, memorable viewing. What happened to Francis Ford Coppola?

So while on the subject of cool, the epitomy of which could be said to be Marc Jacobs muse Sofia Coppola, here's the tracklisting for the Marie Antoinette soundtrack. Exciting stuff.

Apparently, the two discs represent the two halves of Marie Antoinette's life. The former having a lighter feel, plays during her younger, less troubled years. The latter is purported to illustrate the mood as her life at Versailles starting turning nightmarish. Indeed, Antonia Fraser's biography (on which the film is based) presents her life in this manner.

What can I say? Adam and the Ants, Siouxsie, The Cure (why Plainsong?), New Order. A fantastic mix, although I have yet to see how the music, converse and period gowns cohere on screen. The trailer with New Order pumping in the background, was walking the fine line between cutting edge and embarrassment for me.

However, she has a great track record with Air and Kevin Shields. I'm still not quite sure whether I burst into tears at the end of Lost in Translation because of its proximity to my experience in Japan, because of its bitter-sweet romance or because of the opening bars of Justlikehoney. The use of the Jesus and Mary Chain was inspired, it still gives me goosebumps just thinking about it.
