What’s in My Bag: Business Owner of Honey & Wood Everyday Carry

Q & A Interview with Small Business Owner of Honey & Wood:

Let’s start off with a personal bio about yourself:

My name is Adam Black and I am the full time Worship Pastor / Band Director for RiverTree Church in Cincinnati, OH. I also started a small business with my wife called Honey & Wood; we specialize in handmade goods and promote a creative lifestyle.

I got married in 2010 to my beautiful wife Brittany, and together we have 2 cats and 0 children. We have both lived in Cincinnati our whole lives and absolutely love it here! We are also currently the heads of a ministry called TRIBE where we are working hard at raising up a community of creative artists and entrepreneurs so that we may help them reach their goals and give them a safe place to express their creativity. Our goal is to eventually open up a full time school, teaching about art and creativity.

My sister in law turned my every day carry into delicious cakes for my birthday! All the cakes were homemade “funfetti”

1) What would a day in your life look like Adam?

I usually wake up to one of my cats sitting on my chest begging for food..not just usually… every single day. I then go through my simple morning routine to prepare for the day and make sure to grab all of my essential items for the day. This always includes some sort of knife, wallet, pen & paper, and lighter. I will always have those things with me then I will grab things that will help compliment the day. I then go to work where I am working closely with other musicians to write new songs or work on musical ideas to prepare for our Sunday services at church. Afterwards I am usually filming the rest of the day for my VLOG on YouTube, this usually involves me and my wife going out and doing something, whether it’s going to a movie, park, restaurant or concert. We try to do new things frequently. When we get back home for the night You can usually find me editing videos or working on some art project or craft.

2) What’s the toughest part about being a full time pastor?

The toughest part of being a full time pastor is simply the image people expect pastors to be. Most people expect pastors to be a perfect person and never mess up in their life but I am quite far from perfect and mess up all the time. The hardest part that goes along with that is simple things like people telling me what I can and cannot enjoy because of my position (ex. The Walking Dead television show). I love zombies and the horror/suspense genre and I always will, but sometimes when you voice that love people think you should no longer be their pastor and need to punished…..I wish I were joking.

3) What’s the best part about being a pastor?

The freedom. I have a large amount of work that needs to be done every single week but I also get many opportunities to do things to grow my ministry and to be creative while doing so. Not many people can leave their desk whenever they want, to go pick up a guitar for a few hours and write some new music. That is something I will always smile about when I’m at work.

4) What would be some advice that you would like to tell others about?

Don’t be scared to follow your heart and don’t worry about what another person thinks of you. People have been saying these same cheesy things for years and I really wish people would take them to heart! The world needs YOU to be YOU. We don’t need any more Elvis impersonators…we need someone to surpass the original. We don’t need anymore cover bands… we need original songs! We don’t need any more cookie cutter style homes or mini vans. We need to be original. Thats scary, but beautiful. Don’t conform or only show people what you think they want to see. Own who you are! Own what you do!
