Chapter 1
1.2 Ancestry: You Can’t Handle The Truth

Tristan lay in her bed tossing and turning as the TV played in the background. All should think about were the results of the DNA test out there in her living room lying on her coffee table. Her Yorkshire terrier lay at the foot of her bed looking up at her every time she moved and woke him up. “Hey don’t look at me like that, this is my bed.” Tristan said.

She knew that there was no way she would get any sleep until see saw the results. But she also knew that if the results said what she felt like they would say she wouldn’t get any sleep either. Tristan sat in her bed and stared at the TV screen. She let out a deep sigh as she grabbed the remote control from the nightstand and began to flip through the channels. Although Tristan wanted answers she just wasn’t ready for change. Especially not the change that finding out you were dropped into the wrong family would cause.

Tristan was single and she lived alone in a one-bedroom apartment. She had a regular nine to five job working at a fast food restaurant as a shift manager. She was content but she wasn’t happy. Tristan dreamed of having a life like the ones she saw on TV. Like the heartwarming TV movies where a close-knit family went through trials but stuck together and somehow made it though. All Tristan Rhodes knew were the trials and tribulations of family. She didn’t know love or togetherness. She knew hate, jealous and betrayal which all seemed to be directed at her.

Of course she knew that there was a possibility that she was related to some nice rich people but there was also the possibility that her biological family was worse than the one she got stuck with. The thought of unknown frightened her but she had to know the truth. Tristan slowly got up from her bed and went into the living room with her Yorkshire terrier at her heels. She took a seat on the couch and stared at the envelope sitting on her coffee table. “I guess its now or never Ash.” She said to her dog that sat at her feet looking up at her wagging his tail.

Tristan grabbed the envelope from the table and opened it. She slowly took out the letter enclosed and unfolded it. She was so shocked at what she read that she had to read again. “This can’t be right.” Tristan said confused as she stood up and began to pace back and forth around the room. “Not only are my parents not my parents I’m only half black.” She said. “I knew that bullshit about me getting my curly hair from our families Native American ancestors was a lie!” She exclaimed. Tristan sat down on the couch with a bewildered look her face. “I can’t believe this.” She said. “Did they kidnap me, was I switched at birth, what happened and what do I do now?” she asked as she lowered her head and put her face in her hands.
