Chapter 1
1.3 The Book: Just My Imagination

Aquila sat at her computer desk staring at her laptop. The book she had just got from the antique bookstore was lying on the desk right next to her. Her best friend Christian was sitting on the edge of her bed looking intently through his phone. The blinds to the only window in her bedroom were open letting just enough sunlight in.

“No stroke of genius yet?” Christian asked as he looked up from his phone.

“No not yet.” Aquila said annoyed. “I think I have an idea but I’m still going through the who, what, why, when and where of it all.” She said.

“Okay so run what you have by me, I am the editor you know.” Christian grinned.

Aquila rolled her eyes and laughed. “Okay so the story is about a dream stealer who steals people’s dreams and daydreams and replaces them with nightmares.” She said. “That all I have.” She added.

“That sounds awesome.” Christian said.

“Yeah but I have to have a backstory for the character, like how he became a dream stealer and why.” Aquila said.

“Why don’t you just start writing down what you have then maybe the rest will come to once you see the story on paper.” He suggested.

“That’s good idea.” Aquila said as she opened the drawer to her computer desk and pulled out a notebook and a pen. She placed the notebook on the desk and then she began to write. “Okay so listen to this, the dream stealer lurked amongst the unsuspecting students searching for his next victim.” She read with emotion. “He looked just like any other student as he walked down the halls of Fairview middle school.” She went on. “He had chiseled features, dark hair and piercing green eyes and he was dressed in all black that complimented his tan skin.” She said. “When he smiled you could see his dimples.” She read. “Every tween girl in the school was smitten by his bad boy attitude but little did they know as he grinned at them, he was pure evil, one single touch from him and instantly you would be living your worst nightmare.” She said eerily.

“That was really good, i just got chills.” Christian smiled.

“Thanks, that’s all I got though.” She sighed.

“Yeah but that’s a really great start and I’m sure you will have something really awesome by the time its due.” Christian assured her.

“I sure hope so.” Aquila mumbled.

“Well better get home its almost dinner time and I got a lot of homework to do.” Christian said as he stood up and grabbed his book bag.

“What have you been doing this entire time?” Aquila asked confused.

“Liking photos on picture book.” He replied.

“Come on I’ll walk you out.” Aquila sighed as she shook her head in disappointment.

Aquila began walking Christian to the front door. As they passed the kitchen where Aquila’s mom was cooking dinner she called out to them. “Christian you aren’t going to stay for dinner?” she asked.

“No Ma’am I got a lot of homework to catch up on.” Christian said.

“Okay I will see you later.” She said as she continued to prepare dinner.

“Christian something weird happened with that book earlier.” Aquila whispered nervously as they approached the front door. “I think it may have some sort of magic powers are something.” She said quietly.

“Really Aquila?” Christian laughed. “The book couldn’t even help you get over your writer’s block now you think it has powers?” He asked. “It is old and creepy but I’m willing to bet money that’s all it is.” He added.

“Yeah you are probably right.” She laughed nervously as Christian opened the front door to find Mr. Castillo standing there.

“You leaving already Christian?” Mr. Castillo asked.

“Yes sir.” Christian replied.

“All right see you tomorrow.” Mr. Castillo said.

“Bye.” Christian said he waved goodbye and shut the door.

Maybe Christian was right, maybe Aquila had just imagined the book shocking her and lighting up. Alec and Christian were right there sitting next to her when it happened and they didn’t see a thing.
