StudySoup Raises Prices for Black Friday to Support Education Everywhere

We’re feeling grateful at Studysoup. We have awesome students in our growing community, incredible on-campus interns, notetakers who make everything possible, terrific staff, and a near-endless  opportunity to learn and try new things. But, that’s not the case for everyone. That’s why we’re raising our prices.

No, seriously. We’re raising our prices (not much, don’t worry) from Black Friday through Cyber Monday and donating all proceeds in full to Books for Africa to support Education everywhere. We want to give learners worldwide a reason to be thankful this year.

Why StudySoup Is Raising Prices for Black Friday

Black Friday is nutso. Shoppers are projected to shell out over $60 billion nationwide on TVs, appliances, clothes, and just about everything else under the sun. As people trample and fight each other in hopes of scoring a great deal we can’t help but take pause to think. Something about it just doesn’t echo the “grateful” nature the holiday season embodies.

Well, we’re grateful! And, we have a special opportunity to make a difference. We care about bringing education and literature to those who may not be as fortunate as us. Believe it or not some people don’t even have access to basic education. It’s a luxury, that we’re constantly thankful for.

“I want StudySoup to empower students everywhere,” explains StudySoup CEO Sieva Kozinsky. “I feel lucky for all the opportunities to learn I have had in my life. Not everyone has a local public library, a college education, or access to online learning. Donating our proceeds is a way we can make a difference and help people learn.”

By raising our prices, we want to raise awareness (and money) to help students everywhere. This weekend only – get yourself the materials you need to succeed in class and help someone in need get access to education.

What Other Companies Are Doing

Black Friday backlash has begun and big brands see the writing on the wall. Retail juggernauts, including REI and Apple, have joined a growing movement of stores looking to remind people to be grateful post-Thanksgiving. An entire #GivingTuesday campaign has emerged and you can count StudySoup as down with the cause.

Every store seems to be taking a slightly different approach. REI has received the most attention for closing it’s doors this holiday season and encouraging their would-be-customers to explore nature. Nordstrom, Marshalls, and Costco will be following suite and giving employees the day off as well.

Other stores including, H&M, Kiehl’s and MAC cosmetics, and Veda will be offering customers discounts if they donate old products.

But, when it comes to being a true trend-setter, Cards Against Humanity takes the cake. True to their crass image, the card game company sold boxes of poop to customers for $6 a pop on Black Friday in 2014. The results? 30,000 boxes of poop shipped out for the holidays with all the proceeds going to Heifer International – an organization working to end hunger and poverty around the world by providing livestock and training to struggling communities.

Happy Holidays,

Team StudySoup
