Awuku; Bawumia’s critics hypocritical

Sammy Awuku, is the National Youth Organizer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), who has secured the party’s running mate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia over his statements that the presidency is motivated against Muslims.

According to Mr. Awuku, those complaining that Dr. Bawumia are being much “hypocritical” since to him, “religion has a part to play in our politics.”

Dr. Bawumia while speaking NPP followers in the Sissala East District of the Upper West Region, recommended that the Flagstaff House is not stable enough to reflect Christians and Muslims, which are the 2 main religions in the country.

Though, he mentioned that the NPP administration is permanently concerned about religious balance mostly in the selection its running mates and flagbearers.

His remarks have been widely criticized by a sector of Ghanaians while the National Peace Council, Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante has criticized Dr. Bawumia describing his remarks as “unfortunate.”

But Sammy Awuku in an interview with media said, he realizes nothing wrong with what Dr. Bawumia.

He added, “I do not feel upset by what Dr. Bawumia said. People are just being false on this Dr. Bawumia matter. What Dr. Bawumia told was that our range should evident at every stage of our economy, every stage of our authority system. In our structure it talks about regional and ethnic balance in selections”.

Sammy Awuku further reasoned that what Dr. Bawumia wanted to do was to describe that “when it comes to stability at the seat of government religious-wise there looks to be some kind of difference.”

“…And if as a country we have Muslims and Christians living in it and he is only praying that only as it existed under the NPP government…the combine properties of these 2 religious groups and 2 gentlemen and the team put together took Ghana from a HIPC-riddled economy to a central income bracket lower. Religion has a character to play in our politics,” he claimed.
