4.6-magnitude quake strikes Quito

Video footage showed the moment when a 4.6 earthquake Magnitude hit Ecuador capital Quito late on Monday (August 8) causing light damage and power outage.

Residents also left their homes and went into the streets due to the intense movement provoked by the earthquake.

The most obvious consequence was the power outage in much of the city, which lasted a couple of hours.

According to local media reports, the quake struck just before midnight and was particularly felt due to the shallowness of the epicentre.

Daniel Andrade, a spokesman for Geophysics of the National Polytechnic school, an institution monitoring earthquakes and volcanoes, confirmed these reports.

“It was an earthquake of tectonic origin, i.e., that was generated by the movement of a fault. This fault is part of a very complex system and quite large, which are called the “Quito fault” and last night a segment of these moved which is near the town of Puembo, which is located to the east of the city of Quito. The magnitude was 4.7 on the richter scale. The depth was approximately 7 km (4.3 miles) in the epicentral area, i.e., in the area of Puembo and this is one of the explanations why the quake was quite felt, despite its magnitude which was not that great, it was quite felt especially in the city of Quito. After the earthquake we have recorded a few aftershocks which have occurred,” Andrade said.

Over 650 people died after a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Ecuador in April. It was the worst in nearly seven decades, which also injured around 16,600 people and left 58 missing along the country’s ravaged Pacific coast. One hundred and thirteen people were rescued from damaged buildings.
