Fast moving fire burns San Bernadino

Firefighters battled a large growing fire in San Bernardino county, California, that’s scorched more than 1,000 acres (405 hectares), prompting evacuations and closure of several roads, local media say.

Dubbed the “pilot fire,” the blaze has been listed as fast growing.

Crews are hoping to contain the wildfire burning near Pilot Rock Conservation Camp in drought-stricken terrain and firefighters called in helicopters and fire extinguishing planes to douse the blaze.

Nearly 30 major wildfires are reported to have burned roughly 700 square miles (1,813 sq km) in 12 states, mostly in the West, according to the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho.

The fire threat, coming in the middle of the region’s summer travel season, has prompted the closure of several popular California campgrounds and recreation areas.
