Trump defends his NATO comments

U.S. Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump says, as president, he would tell non-paying NATO members to “pay up” or “get out”, and defends his idea that South Korea and Japan should Acquire Nuclear Weapons to deter enemies.

Ahead of the Republican nominating contest in Wisconsin, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump came out in the city of Racine to defend his remarks about NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and the Korean Peninsula.

“I’m getting great praise from people, saying, ‘He really understands it. He really does understand the whole thing with NATO,” Trump said, responding to criticism for declaring in an interview that NATO had become obsolete and for asserting that as president he might loosen the ties with long-standing U.S. allies.

Trump also reacted to his recent comment that South Korea and Japan should acquire Nuclear Weapons to deter enemies.

“There’s a group of people that are very smart people that say ‘maybe it’s a lot better for us if Japan pays their own way and they arm and they take care of North Korea,'” Trump said.

U.S. President Barack Obama said on Friday that Trump’s remarks about the Korean Peninsula show the leading Republican presidential candidate was not well informed on international relations.
