Associated press reports Big Freedia has been charged with theft of government funds. The Feds have alleged that she misreported her earning from 2010 to 2014 in order to receive money from the Department of Housing and Urban Development and continue living in subsidized housing.

Freedia made the following statement about the recent findings:

“This is an incredibly unfortunate situation. I was on subsidized housing for many years before my financial situation changed. I quickly found myself in a new economic structure and, frankly, knew little about how to handle my money. It wasn’t until recently (after I had stopped receiving housing vouchers) that it became very clear I had received assistance to which I wasn’t entitled. It was an oversight — but one that I take full responsibility for. From the moment I was contacted by Government agents, I have fully cooperated and have already begun making arrangements to pay full restitution (of approximately $34,000).

“Housing vouchers are a vital lifeline for many people I know in New Orleans and around the country, including struggling artists. I truly believe there needs to be more programs for artists and musicians to teach basic financial literacy and planning. Coming from where I came from, I know that I could have used that kind of assistance. I’m exploring ways to be a part of the solution in this area and am looking forward to putting this matter behind me.”

Freedia girl, you tried it. You knew good and well you was stealing boo. Life can be hard on the kids, we all know this. Homelessness and lack of education are two huge problems in the queer people of color community. Lack there of, will and can lead to some bad decision making for our survival. It's a cycle we all know to well:

LGBT kids get thrown out for being gay - they now have to resort to living on the street or with friends here and there - they are struggling to survive, so how can homeless youth even think about going to school -  the lack of education and the need to survive can lead youth into doing things to survive that that normally would not have to do if they had their family support. (The kids are legendary for credit card scams and prostitution (or more realistically known as survival sex). That shit keeps their asses in prison).

If the streets don't chew them up and spit them out and they are blessed enough to get on their feet, programs like HUD are vital in helping anyone in a difficult situation resume life after terrifying and traumatizing situations. Just as sure as the system is there to assist people in extreme circumstances, folks are going to abuse it as well.

Money management classes needed because you are now getting coined up- yes; still living life like your ass is JJ from Good Times and needing some welfare -no.
