Sergio Agüero was carried off with a leg Injury during Argentina’s World Cup qualifier with Ecuador in what could be a huge blow to Manchester City, with the striker reportedly left in tears in the dressing room.
Agüero had suffered a slow start to the season before scoring five in last Saturday’s 6-1 victory over Newcastle United. Yet after 22 minutes of Argentina’s 2-0 loss to Ecuador in Buenos Aires he pulled up and was forced to leave the game.

Gerardo Martino, the Argentina coach, confirmed the injury, while revealing Agüero had been carrying a differing problem. “He had been carrying a knock with his club, during the week we took good care of him,” Martino said. “He was moving around the pitch well but unfortunately he felt some discomfort and we are going to lose him. I haven’t spoken to the doctor but I can confirm the injury is not the same as the one he had been carrying with his club.”
Afterwards Nicolás Otamendi, Agüero’s Argentina and City team-mate, said: “He had been having a great time and was playing well.” The defender also reportedly stated Agüero was crying in the dressing room.
A statement from the Argentina Football Association later confirmed the injury: “Agüero suffered a muscle injury in the femoral biceps of his left leg and we will conduct more studies on Friday.”
The concern at City will be that Agüero could suffer a return to the muscle injuries that plagued him until last season.
Following the international break, City face a run of seven games in three weeks that could be pivotal to their campaign. Manuel Pellegrini’s side play Sevilla home and away in the Champions League, Crystal Palace in the Capital One Cup, and Bournemouth, Norwich City, Manchester United and Aston Villa in the Premier League, before the next international break in November.
