Managing Forest Fires

Many Communities

After the devastation of Forest Fires in 1916, 300 fire towers were built in Ontario, to assist in catching forest fires before they spread. Today, satellite and aircraft survey.

Thankfully, many communities are able to respond to Alberta’s needs in Fort Mcmurray. On May 16, Simcoe County will have a 53 foot trailer going to Fort McMurray with donated goods from Barrie and surrounding areas, according to simcoedotcom

The Salvation Army was quick to act to feed First Responders and disaster survivors. They will continue to fundraise as the need for food rises. Donations can be made by phoning 1-800-SAL-ARMY.

The main overseer, Red Cross, appreciates all donations. What is suggested is funding, so it can be allocated where needed immediately. 1-800-418-1111 can be called to make a donation to the Red Cross efforts.

As for Fire Towers..The Ranger’s cabin that once housed the tower watchman and his wife remains as part of a historical tourist attraction in Elliot Lake
