Characteristics for Good Leadership According to Paul

When you consider the writings of Apostle Paul and the many travels establishing churches as well as placing leadership to lead and guide the churches growth and expansion. You would uncover great clues to what could be defined as successful leadership. Let’s identify some from his writings.

Looking at Romans 12, I captured what I believe are keys to emulate:

  • Everything you set to do in your life, must demonstrate your commitment, dedication and submission to “be a living and holy sacrifice, the kind that God will find acceptable.” (Romans 12:1 NLT)
  • As the leader you need to aware to “not copy the behavior and customs of the world, instead let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.” (Romans 12:2 NLT)
  • As the leader who guides others, don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest and evaluation yourself by the faith God has given you. (Romans 12:3 NLT)
  • Recognize that we are all in this together and it will take all of us with our gifts (given by God) working together with a sense of community to make a difference. (Romans 12:5 NLT)
  • Each of us by God’s grace have been given differing gifts and his expectation is that we will use our gifts. He clearly states that if you have been “given leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously,” (Romans 12:8 NLT)
  • As the lead you will need to genuinely care about people, “hate what is wrong, hold tight to what is good don’t be lazy in your role, work hard, delight in honoring others and serve the Lord enthusiastically.” (Romans 12:9-11 NLT)
  • “Be patient in trouble, keep on praying, bless those who persecute you and live in harmony with each oher.” Romans 12:12-13 NLT)
  • “Never seek to pay back evil for evil, do everything so that others see you as honorable, live in peace with those you lead, never take revenge and refuse to let evil conquer you” emotionally or psychologically. (Romans 12:17-21 NLT)

These are just some food for thought as you step up and out as the leader of others. When you understand how you are under authority to God, you will be better able to apply these tools that will assist you in being a confident leader with real vision for others.

Until next time…all authority comes from God and you will have to stand before him one day to give an account to what you did with what God he gave you.
