Football is a beautiful game, but there are times when it can be rather gruesome. Whilst no one wants to see a serious injury on a Premier League pitch, we all can’t help trying to get a glimpse of a snapped leg or a deep wound – it’s just human nature.

You always know when something bad has happened to a footballer. A player and the referee will urgently wave the medical team onto the pitch, and other players will be holding their heads in shock, as if what they just witnessed will stay with them forever.

In all but two of these seven devastating Premier League Injuries, the players went on to continue their careers – with differing success. But without exception, something changed for these eight men the day their vomit-inducing injury shocked the world.

8. Djibril Cisse – Liverpool

The last thing you expect to see when you go to the match on a Saturday afternoon is blood on the pitch and a scene froma war-torn country in the Middle East. Unfortunately, for Liverpool fans, this is exactly what they saw when French striker Djibril Cisse broke his left leg.

During a match against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park, Cisse went down after a seemingly innocuous challenge from a Blackburn player. Slow motion replays showed Cisse’s leg snap in two – breaking the skin and the hearts of thousands of Liverpool fans. Cisse’s fibula and tibia had snapped, and his feet ended up pointing in very different directions.

Incredibly, bad luck was to revisit Cisse again during a match for France. The French forward’s right leg snapped in two this time – once again as a result of an awkward landing rather than a challenge from an opposition player.
