blue valentine

you always Hurt the one you love
the one you shouldn't hurt at all
you always take the sweetest rose
and crush it till the petals fall

you always break the kindest heart
with a hasty word you can't recall, so
if i broke your heart last night
it's because i love you most of all

blue valentine is a Film about a day in the life of a couple whose marriage is failing. it goes back and forth between this day and flashbacks of their past. these flashbacks show bits and pieces of their courtship and vital choices they made that led them to the inevitable failure of their love. why make a romance film that doesn't have a happy ending, you ask? i think it sends an important message of the reality that life doesn't always turn out as you hope, and sometimes it's not even a situation where one specific person is at fault. some things just aren't meant to be.

this was beautifully filmed. ryan gosling and michelle williams were phenomenal, and the story was heartbreaking but at the same time very touching. you feel for both the characters. in most break-up stories there is usually one person that is mainly at fault so your first reaction would be to feel angry, but you can't feel that emotion at any point in this film. just sadness, heartbreak, & helplessness. other than feeling those emotions you also understand why it happened the way it did. you understand that reality isn't always the prettiest thing and that sometimes you really don't have any control over a situation. and i really liked that about this film. it's the kind of story that really leaves an impression on people because it's something we can all somehow relate to.
