Kata literally means "form" or "model." Kata is a series of formal movements which represent various offensive and defensive positions. These positions are based combat ideal for applications. Referred to as applied in the demonstration applications with real opponents that Bunkai. Bunkai shows how to use every position and movement. Bunkai is a useful tool for understanding the kata.

To reach the rank of an official must prove competent karateka performance in the specific kata required for this phase. The Japanese terminology commonly used for grades or ranks. Exam requirements vary between schools.
