Morning Light

Early pearly morning light
Came the sleepers to the street
In great numbers, from their slumbers
Snow about their wooden feet
Came the workers past the gates
Chilly chatter, black boots clatter
Nightshift waiting for their mates
Came the children dogs and cats
Tired mothers and baby brothers
In their prams and woolen hats

Hustle bustle morning light
Came the cycle tram and train
It's not pretty, Salford City
It rains again and again
Came the artist and his eye
No summer skies, no butterflies
Just plain folk like you and I
Came the lonely and the sad
Spiraling gloom, impending doom
So much good from so much bad.
