Catholic priest shot dead by armed robbers who stole £185 church collection

The holy man was attacked as he drove home from mass and despite trying to flee was shot in the head

This shocking CCTV captured the moment a catholic priest was shot dead by armed robbers who stole a £185 church collection.

Footage shows 31-year-old pastor Goncalo Alves Neto stopping his car on a small street as the car in front looks as if it is going to do a U-turn.

But seconds later a man waving a hand gun gets out and runs towards the holy man's car.

The victim tries to escape and put his foot down, but as he passes by the attacker shoots him in the head.

His car carries on and crashes into a wall just a few meters away.

The heartless thief then runs to the car and steals the money - around 800 Brazilian Real - which had been collected during an earlier mass from parishioners donating to the church.

A frightened woman who was sitting next to the priest in the driver’s seat, got out of the car and started screaming for help.

Goncalo Alves Neto, of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, in the Arthur Alvim neighbourhood in Eastern Sao Paulo, died instantly.

Police have identified the vehicle that was found on the city outskirts, but the attackers have not yet been caught.

A police representative told Brazilian media: "Given the CCTV images and the way the murder occurred, the hypothesis is that the attackers knew the priest had money in his car".
