New blog, New York & new work

I thought I should start out by talking a little about my self and what made me start this blog. I am quickly approaching my graduation from Florida Atlantic University with my BFA (my concentration being in painting). At this point my actual diploma feels almost irrelevant. The body of artwork that I'm currently working on is finally the work that I have always wanted to make. That is what I have been working for during the last 3 years of School even more then my diploma. In the past I have always looked at other artist whose work I felt resonates with me more then my own work does. I have struggled in the academic world to break away from assignments and what my teachers wanted me to make, and make the work that best expresses myself. Taking Classes in which you paint a still life or a nude model is certainly helpful for your craft and technique but it only distances you from the work that is true to your self.

My artwork has changed a lot in the past few months, mostly because it has finally started moving in a real direction, instead of being a group of works with nothing in common from one to the next. I spent this last summer in New York City (looking at, talking about, and making art, until I thought my brain might explode). Then I came back to Florida and made absolutely no artwork for a month. After I was finally able to reflect on everything from the summer I started to make art once coming back to school (mostly because I had to or I would fail all of my classes). To my great delight I found that I was finally able to make art that I felt I was not able to make before that summer. Art that felt right to me and that is not only relevant to myself but I think it is also relevant to others (and I hope you agree).

Stay posted, I'll be regularly updating you with images of new work and works in progress along with anything else art related that I think is interesting or relevant.
