Company Results

  • Carpetright have reported a 1.3% decrease in group sales to £456.8m for the 52 weeks to 30 April 2016. UK total sales decreased by 1.3% to £391m while UK like-for-like sales increased by 2.8% for the same period. Underlying pre-tax profit stood at £17.3m.
  • Constellation Brands enjoyed a bumper fiscal first-quarter, according to figures released today, with net profits rising by a third.

  • Dixons Carphone have reported a 5% increase in group revenue to £9.7bn for the year ended 30 April 2016. UK like-for-like revenue increased by 6% for the same period while in profit before tax stood at £447m.
  • Ocado have reported a 15.1% increase in revenue to £584.2m for the 24 weeks ended 15 May 2016. Gross retail sales increased by 13.1% to £582.9m for the same period, while profit before tax stood at £8.5m.

Sales of lifestyle goods posted LFL sales of -4.50% this week. Despite the negative result, it was the best performer of the week. Larger department stores and electrical goods retailers outperformed the gift retailers this week.

Despite posting a higher result than last week, fashion was still down by -9.36% this week as compared to the same week last year. Fashion remains in the doldrums, posting its second week in a row at below -9%.

Homewares recorded the most disappointing figures this week, down by -11.10%. It was its poorest result since August last year. The figure is particularly disappointing coming off of a very weak base of -12.10% for the same week last year. 100% of respondents who reported negative LFL sales figures were into double digit declines.

The poor performance of bricks and mortar did not receive much help from online retail to offset falling revenues. Non-store saw positive LFL sales of just +6.79% this week, dropping below the 10% mark and recording its lowest result in thirteen weeks. Homewares made up some ground online with 67% of respondents reporting positive LFL sales figures. For lifestyle, 64% of respondents reported positive online figures, while for fashion, only 53% of respondents reported positive non-store growth.

According to IMRG MetaPack UK delivery index, online retail delivery volumes were up by 25.2% year-on-year in May 2016, the strongest growth recorded so far in 2016. This strong performance was built on particularly weak yearonyear growth in May 2015 (+2.5%) as the UK was heading into a highly uncertain general election which seemed to dent shopper confidence. However the EU referendum didn’t seem to have the same effect in 2016 despite the outcome. In line with the theme over 2015, the quality of service has continued to perform well in 2016 as compared to previous years. The percentage of ‘ontime / attempted delivery’ was up a full percentage point year-on-year at 94.9% for May 2016. The performance of delivery index was also consistent with that of the sales index, where revenue grew by 17%.
