Kawartha Jazz Society wants to donate piano

Market Hall is very pleased that the Kawartha Jazz Society has offered to donate a grand piano that may be worth $25,000.

Market Hall Performing Arts development director Karen August said the board will likely vote to officially accept the donation during Wednesday's board meeting.

"But I don't see any problems with that," she said.

The jazz society, which stopped offering concerts in 2009 due to low turnouts, has offered the nine-foot Kawai piano on the condition it be offered to future jazz acts for no charge. It's currently housed at Showplace Performance Centre and has been used in the past by groups such as Peterborough New Dance and Folk Under the Clock, August said.

The society's also offering to donate the piano bench, a custom-made vinyl protective cover and a platform to support the piano bench, said jazz society president Ken Brown.

He said the piano was bought in 1990 for $15,000 although local piano technician Don Anderson said at the time it was worth "at least $25,000."

The jazz society fundraised in the late 1980s to buy the piano and it has been at the Market Hall virtually ever since, Brown said.

"So in a sense (this donation) is a formality," Brown said.

He said it could entice touring bands to play at Market Hall, which is undergoing renovations and expected to reopen in March.
