Cox's Bazar was Named after a British Officer Captain Hiram Cox. In 18th century Cox was appointed as the superintendent of "Palonkee". "Palonkee" is the former name of Cox's Bazar. There was a conflict between Arakan refugees and Rakhains. After the conquest of Arakan by the Burmese a group of Magh seek shelter in the then British territory. Cox was genial to the people. The suffering of the people touched his heart. He took the responsibility to rehabilitate them. Each refugee family was granted 2.4 acres of land and also granted food support for 6 months. The process was going on but sudden death stopped him. Hiram Cox died(1799) before the completion of the rehabilitation work. To commemorate his role in rehabilitation work a market was established and was named after him as Cox's Bazar.
