Cartoons: A mirror of the society

The cartoonist is suddenly the talk of the town, albeit not for reasons the fraternity would be proud of. The recent spate of discussions around Mr Aseem Trivedi’s cartoons (against corruption, which he claims) has sparked a debate on what does a cartoonist intend to do.
I personally believe that a cartoon could communicate a message that could be positive or negative, but with some humor. The reader should understand the message but it should also bring a smile on his / her face.  Though art cannot be compared, below is a snapshot of 2 cartoons by the iconic RK Laxman, who I admire. His cartoons were a mirror of the society, but depicted with impeccable class and wit. The below cartoons by RK were done a while ago, but still is relevant given the current scenario. It is interesting to see how it has been depicted differently by 2 cartoonists.

As the famous cartoonist Scott Adams once quoted “Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep”. Am hoping this is a passing phase and cartoonists are not remembered for these incidents
(Also below is a snapshot of an article from DNA Times, where I shared my views on the recent controversial cartoons)
