Churchill, MB, is not accessible by road.  To reach this most northerly town, on the western shore of the Hudson Bay, visitors travel by rail or small plane.  This makes the getting there an adventure of its own.

From Riding Mountain, we arrived at the historic Hotel Fort Garry and checked into our rooms before taking a walk around this area of downtown Winnipeg.

The railroad staton is located a block away from the hotel, so our first stop was a visit to Union Station where we would be boarding our train in the morning.

The Union Station lobby is beautifully maintained.  The station was constructed from 1908-1911 and offically opened in 1912.

A three-dimensional mural near the station.  Several ravens perched in a tree near the restaurant where we stopped to have dinner, but seemed a bit shy about having their photo made.  This one, was interested in a treasure found in this partially frozen puddle.
We enjoyed a relaxing meal at Cafe 22 on Broadway with Italian dip for the bread artfully displayed as we began our meal.
There are no pics of the food, which is a shame because it was wonderful!  I admittedly got a bit distracted.  We created our own pasta dishes, selecting the pasta, our preferred sauce, and our favorite toppings.  Heavenly!

Once we arrived back at the hotel, it was time to rearrange gear and clothes and get the small bag ready for three-days on the train.  The larger one would be held in the train's baggage storage and inaccessible until arrival in Churchill.  On this part of the trip, layering was essential, both for varying weather conditions and minimizing luggage for cabin storage.  You'll see why in my next post.
Doesn't that look inviting?  Very comfortable room.  A note for the next visit--the electrical plugs in the bathroom turn off with the light, so charge electronics elsewhere!
