With the cold weather upon us it’s time to cozy up indoors with a good movie and a ball or two of yarn. You could Knit a slouchy hat, crochet a cozy chunky cowl, or crochet a scarf. You will love this knit shawl pattern too.

Knit shawl pattern

The one thing that I really don’t like about the cold weather is my back being cold. Once my back is cold I cannot warm up. This winter I decided to make a thick knit shawl that I can wear anywhere. It’s perfect for porch sitting, or for wearing out and about.

Supplies

• 3 balls of Lion Brand Re-Spun yarn in olive branch
• Size US 10 (6mm) knitting needles
• Scissors
• Large sewing needle
• Cardboard 3″ x 5″ (depending on your desired length of tassels) – I cut a piece out of a pizza box lid

Instructions

Cast on 76 stitches.

Knit 2, Purl 2, repeat (you will end on 2 purl stitches).

Purl 2, Knit 2, repeat (you will end on 2 knit stitches).

Unlike a rib stitch where you purl the knits and knit the purls on the next row, we are going to knit the knits and purl the purls. So if your first row ends on 2 purl stitches, the second row starts with 2 purl stitches. It reminds me of a variation of moss stitch.

Continue this pattern until you have reached your desired length; mine is 46″ long.

Cast off once you’ve reached the length that you want it. To get the length I wanted I kept wrapping it around my neck and looking at it in front of the mirror.

You can now use your large sewing needle to hide your ends by weaving them into the pattern.

The final step is to add tassels to your knit shawl.

Follow the images above to make your tassels but I’m adding some notes below.

In step 2, when you are winding the yarn make sure that both ends are on the same side. I find it easier to have the start and end at the bottom of the cardboard.

In step 3, tie a piece of yarn around the top and secure it, before cutting the bottom section off the cardboard.

Use your needle to attach the tassels to each of the four corners of the shawl.
