Samuel – Chapter One

My eyes shoot open as a dream of my old home startles me awake. Just the memory of the fire and brimstone is enough to make me angry.

The bars of the holding cell are the only things separating me from the groups of law enforcement officers rushing from place to place, doing whatever they need to.

I groan to myself as I recollect how I ended up in this situation. I was only trying to help that poor girl. That bastard was about to do something terrible. I could see the wicked eyes of the demon that tempted him peering out through his own. I did what I thought anyone else would do… I tried to save the girl.

I yelled at her to run as I struggled with the man, or rather, the demon inside him. I have a feeling that I’ve dealt with this one back home before, but I’ll never know for sure. The bastard overpowered me, and left me for the police, claiming that I attacked him out of nowhere.

No matter how much I tried to explain, these officers wouldn’t believe me! I swear, I’ve only been on Earth for a few minutes and things are already going wrong! Well, I guess it’s good that girl got away safely.

I groan, tossing my raven black hair away from my eyes, remembering what my father said to me before I ended up in this situation.

“You are to live amongst the humans you hold so dear, and see their corruption first hand.”

That was the last thing he said to me before two of his lackeys helped him banish me here, not that I want to go back. I’d rather be dead than deal with his stupid ideals. Tempting man to sin is simply wrong, no matter how you look at it.

My thoughts are interrupted by the sound of a key opening a lock. I look up to see a burly male officer opening my cell.

“Samuel Braeden, you’re free to go.” he says plainly, his face showing no expression at all.

Not that I’m complaining, but I’m already free? I may know a little bit about how these humans work, but I have no idea what’s going on.

I stand up from the bench, straightening out my white hooded jacket.

“Really?” I ask, standing up from the small bench in the cell. “Why?”

The officer looks at his clipboard, clearly not in the mood to explain things.

“Someone paid for your bail.” he says, looking down the page, stopping near the bottom. “A Miss Jesse Bell.”

I feel a pit open up in my stomach. That name is the last thing I want to hear.

“Sammy!”

A woman’s voice breaks me out of my thoughts as I feel two arms wrap around my shoulders and chest from behind. I turn my head to see waves of Bright Red hair and emerald green eyes.

“It’s so good to see you!” the woman says as she almost chokes me in her grasp.

“Can’t… breathe…” I struggle to say as I feel my lungs being crushed inside my chest.

She releases her hold on me. I’m glad that I can get out of here, but I’d rather not be saved by her of all beings.

Jesebel. One of my father’s most powerful allies. A demon, both figuratively and literally. Although, any other man looking at her human form right know probably wouldn’t mind, given how little that bright red crop top of hers covers.

“I’ll be taking my boyfriend home now!” she says, pulling me towards the doors faster than I can say or do anything.

Boyfriend? Home?

This whole situation just keeps getting worse. I would say this is hell, but honestly, this is actually somewhat better than home.
